Vietnam travel guide

Vietnam is a year-round destination, but timing your visit to the right region makes all the difference.

  • Best Time to Visit:  The north (Hanoi, Sapa) is best from October to April. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) is drier from November to April. Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang) shines from February to May.
  • Getting Around: Domestic flights are incredibly cheap and efficient. Trains offer a scenic coastal journey. Buses and private cars are great for shorter distances.
  • Food & Drink: You haven't lived until you've slurped a bowl of Pho from a tiny street-side stall for breakfast. Banh Mi is a perfect lunch, and fresh seafood is available everywhere along the coast.
  • Culture: Respectful clothing is key when visiting pagodas and temples. Cover your shoulders and knees. A small bargaining is expected in markets, but always with a smile.

Common Scams in Vietnam:

Vietnam, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, has become an increasingly popular travel destination. However, like any other tourist hotspot, Vietnam is not immune to scams. Being aware of common scams in the country can help travellers stay vigilant and ensure a smoother, more enjoyable journey. Read more

Here are some prevalent scams in Vietnam that you should be aware of along with tips on how to avoid falling victim to them:
  • The Helpful Local Scam: In this scam, a seemingly friendly local offers unsolicited help, such as providing directions or assisting with luggage. Once the assistance is offered, the scammer demands an exorbitant fee for their services. To avoid this, politely decline help unless absolutely necessary, and agree on any charges upfront.
  • Motorbike scams: Motorbike scams are quite common in Vietnam. Be careful when renting a motorbike from a local person who doesn’t own a rental business. They may charge you extra fees or steal your passport. Always rent from a reputable company and take pictures of the bike before you rent it.
  • Pickpockets and snatch thieves: Petty crimes are super common in Vietnam. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and important documents with you.
  • Cyclo and Taxi Scams: Cyclos and taxis are convenient modes of transportation in Vietnam, but scams involving these services are common. Some drivers may insist on inflated fares or take unnecessarily long routes. Always use a reputable taxi company or opt for metered taxis, and establish the fare or use ride-sharing apps beforehand. Some taxi drivers may take longer routes to increase the fare. Always ask the driver to use the meter and make sure it’s running. Some cyclo drivers may overcharge you or take you to a different location. Always negotiate the price before taking a ride and make sure the driver knows where you want to go.
  • Fruit basket and coconut seller scams: Be wary of street vendors selling fruit baskets or coconuts. They may overcharge you or give you fake money as a change. Always check the money you receive and negotiate the price before buying anything.
  • Duplicate businesses: Be careful when visiting shops or restaurants. Some businesses may have similar names or logos to reputable businesses. They may overcharge you or give you fake products. Always check the name and logo of the business before entering
  • Shoe shining scams: Be careful when getting your shoes shined on the street. Some shoe shiners may overcharge you or steal your shoes. Always negotiate the price before getting your shoes shined.
  • Donut restaurant and bar scams: Be careful when visiting donut restaurants or bars. Some places may overcharge you or add extra items to your bill. Always check the bill before paying
  • Luggage scams: Be careful when leaving your luggage with someone. Some people may steal your luggage or charge you extra fees. Always use a reputable luggage storage service.
  • Shopping scams: Be careful when shopping in markets or stores. Some vendors may overcharge you or give you fake products. Always negotiate the price before buying anything and check the quality of the product.
  • Fake Tour Guide scams: Impersonating a tour guide, scammers may approach tourists, offering guided tours to popular attractions. Once payment is made, they vanish. Always book tours through reputable agencies, hotels, or online platforms to ensure legitimacy.
  • Currency scams: Receiving counterfeit money as change is a risk, especially in busy markets. Thoroughly inspect bills, and be cautious during transactions. Familiarize yourself with the local currency's appearance and security features. Many scammers take advantage of the high denomination of the Vietnamese Dong and often cheat tourists by not providing proper change or by switching out high-value currency notes with a lower-value note, make sure you pay attention while giving and receiving money.
  • Hotel Booking Scams: Bogus hotel booking websites may appear legitimate, tricking travellers into making reservations with nonexistent accommodations. Use well-known booking platforms, read reviews, and verify reservations directly with the hotel.
  • Gem and Art Scams: Vietnam is known for its art and gem markets, but tourists may fall prey to scams involving overpriced or fake items. Be cautious when making such purchases, seek reputable dealers, and verify the authenticity of products. Show less

Tips to Avoid Scams in Vietnam:

  • Research Extensively: Before your trip, research common scams specific to your destination. Awareness is your best defense against scams.
  • Stay Informed: Stay updated on the latest travel advisories and forums where fellow travellers share their experiences and tips.
  • Keep Valuables Secure: Use anti-theft bags, money belts, and hotel safes to safeguard your valuables, minimizing the risk of theft.
  • Be Wary of Unsolicited Offers: If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Exercise caution with unsolicited assistance, especially when a fee is involved.

While scams exist in Vietnam, they shouldn't overshadow the country's beauty and warmth. By staying informed, using reputable services, and remaining vigilant, travellers can navigate Vietnam's vibrant streets, markets, and attractions with confidence.

By arming yourself with knowledge about common scams and adopting a vigilant mindset, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable journey through this captivating Southeast Asian nation.
