Russia travel guide

The world’s largest country Russia is situated on the Eastern side of Europe and to the North of Asia. The capital city of Russia is Moscow, and the official language is Russian. Being a large and diverse country, Russia occupies one-tenth of the land on Earth. Read more

The Ruble is the currency used in Russia. Earlier, a part of U.S.S.R, Russia became an independent country after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991.
Being a huge nation, no surprise Russia includes a vast range of landforms and environments that include steppes or grasslands, deserts, the Arctic Tundra, and dense forests. It also has the longest, largest, and deepest lakes.

Russia’s climate is extreme, with forbidding winters where the temperature dips to -8 degree Celsius. Hence, the best season for traveling to Russia is May through October.

Russia, especially the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg are entirely safe for tourists. However, always be careful of the surroundings and avoid the dodgy areas. Also, carry a copy of your passport along with you always.

The cities Moscow and St. Petersburg have good public transport making it easy to move around. They also have private taxis which are safer, and they charge 200 to 500 rubles for any distance.

It is good to have a Russian version of the address on a piece of paper or your phone to be able to communicate your destination to the drivers.

It is important to take help of an English-speaking guide or keep a book of common phrases handy to avoid language woes.

What to see in Russia

Most of the attractive sights to see in Russia are found in or near St. Petersburg and Moscow. For better understanding of the culture, and history, guided tours are recommended.

Near St. Petersburg is Novgorod having the famous 11th-century St. Sophia's Cathedral and Novgorod's buzzing Kremlin. Novgorod city is worth a day trip to discover the rich history of Western Russia.

St. Petersburg is home to diverse and world-famous art and architecture. The Pushkin and Catherine Palace’s Amber Room is a wondrous example of Russian architecture. The Grand Summer Palace at Peterhof is beautiful with its fountains and one-of-a-kind sculptures.

To have a look at the Russian art, you have to visit the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, one of the famed art museums in the world. It is situated in the Winter Palace, and houses some of the world's greatest works of art.

The capital city of Russia Moscow is also the home for its magnificent and unique architecture. The famous cathedral known for its splendid architecture is the St. Basil's Cathedral. Built in the 1550s, this fascinating cathedral consists of nine individual chapels, each capped with its own shaped and coloured dome.

Check out the best works of Russian art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Also visit Kremlin for its scenic beauty.

Russia also offers a lot of adventurous activities for you like Mountain Hiking, Skiing, Hitchhiking – one of the best ways to explore the country, Trekking and Ice cycling.
