Depending on the purpose of your travel to Greece, there are different types of visas that will apply
to the occasion. Whether you are planning to go on a visit, study or work and reside there permanently,
you will have to apply for a different Greece Schengen Visa, accordingly.
Short Stay Visa
If you are planning a short visit to Greece for up to 90 days or less and you do not have the nationality
of one of the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA), you may need to apply for a Schengen
visa. Greece is one of the 26 European countries forming the Schengen Area which have no border
controls between them. These countries also issue a common visa, the Schengen visa for a stay
of up to 90 days during a period of 6 months from the date of the first entry into the territory
of the Schengen States. The different types of short stay visas are Tourist Visa, Business Visa,
Medical Treatment Visa, Visa for Cultural/Sports/Religious Events & Film Crew, Study/Research/Internship
Visa (Short Course), Visa for Members of Official Delegation, Seafarers Visa and Transit Visa
Long stay National Visa
National Visa (“D”)
A long-stay “D” visa allows its holder to enter and stay in Greece for more than 3 months. It can
be issued for various reasons such as employment, study, academic research, participation in
cultural, scientific, religious events, family reunification. Holders of a national visa have
the obligation to apply for a residence permit to Greece immediately after their entry to the
country. The applicant must submit an application for a visa for a long stay in Greece as well
as the supporting documents that are requested according to the purpose of the intended stay.

a. Family Reunification Visa: he family members of a third country national, who may enter
into Greece in the framework of family reunification are, according to Greek legislation (Article
4, Presidential Decree 131/2006) the following:
the spouse, provided he/she is over 18 years of age,
their natural and/or adopted single children of under 18 years of age,
any other natural and/or adopted children of under 18 years of age of the sponsor or his/her
spouse, provided he/she has been awarded their custody.
In the case of polygamy, if the sponsor has a spouse living with him/her in Greece, then family
reunion with any other spouse shall not be authorized
All applicants from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives should submit an application for
Long Stay “D” Visa at the GVCW Visa Application Centre in New Delhi only.
b. Employment Visa: This category of visa is issued for the provision of dependent employment
or for the provision of services or work in Greece. Before applying you should confirm that the
Approval concerning your case has been issued by the competent Prefecture in Greece and that
it has been received officially by the Embassy.
All applicants from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives should submit an application at
the GVCW Visa Application Centre in New Delhi.
Processing time for Long Stay Visa application is solely up to the Embassy discretion.
Please note: There is an extra fee of € 30 in the equivalent of INR 2460 in cash for
the attestation of your signature on the employment contract.
The Medical Fitness Certificate is sent directly to the Greek Embassy in about a week's time.
After submission of the visa application, an interview at the Greek Embassy is scheduled.
c. Study Visa: If you are studying in Greece for less than 90 days, you can apply for a Greece
Short stay visa.. However, if you are studying in Greece for more than 90 days, you will need
to apply for a Long Stay visa or a National visa. Documents required would be as follows:
- Application form for a Long Stay “D” Visa from the GVCW Visa Application Centre (info on the
- Photos (with white background)
- Valid passport, not destroyed, with validity at least 1 year and 3 months after intended travel
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the living expenses during the stay in Greece (equivalent
to at least € 400 per month during the period of studies)
- Recent original police clearance certificate
- Travel insurance valid for the 1st year
- Visa fees of
€ 90, equivalent in
INR 7200 /-, payable in cash in INR during the interview
- Documents for being accepted from the College or University
- Direct mail from Greek University to Consular Section to determine the exact type of visa required
- Relevant approval of operation form from the Ministry for Education in Greece of the Greek College
or University that you have been accepted
- Proof of studies background
- Details regarding the studies (whether courses will be conducted in Greek or English etc)
- Proof of payment of at least one third of the tuition fees
