Guatemala travel guide

Sharing borders with four different nations and two coastlines, Guatemala is a Central American country characterized by mountains and forest covers. Attracting over 2 million tourists annually, the country offers to be a perfect getaway for travel enthusiasts and backpackers.Read more

Ancient ruins, temples, hot springs, mighty Volcanoes and beautiful islands, Guatemala has a lot to boast. Its pleasant climate gives visitors a chance to travel at any time of the year. The dry spell runs between November and April which is considered as the best time to witness dazzling blue skies. During the wet seasons, rainfall is not fierce and only lasts a couple of hours in the main tourist regions. Usually, September months are a no-go as heavy rainfall can disrupt beach time.

In today’s world, most Latin American countries are stereotyped in regard to their safety. Petty crimes are common like anywhere else. Guatemala, for the most part, is safe to travel. Visitors are advised to keep their belongings safe and also avoid walking alone in isolated regions. Spanish is the official language and learning a few phrases gives a nice touch when interacting with locals. Thus, communication barriers can be prevented to some extent.

The journey from India to Guatemala may seem hectic, but world-class carriers such as Lufthansa, American Airlines and Air India fly this route consistently with usually one or two stopovers. Once you arrive at La Aurora International airport in Guatemala City, you can avail buses, vans, rental cars and taxi services at all times.

What to see in Guatemala

Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, is an exciting tourist hotspot. Visit the National Palace and learn a little history showcased as various art portraits. The Cathedral of Guatemala City is a sight to behold as its surreal architecture, and spiritual atmosphere makes for a peaceful evening. Head over to the La Aurora Zoo, known as the largest garden in the city; it has a wide range of exotic species from Asia, America as well as the African continent.

Visit Tikal, a lowland in Guatemala which is an expansive jungle setting popular for its Mayan ruins and historic temples dating back to 1st Century A.D.

For hiking enthusiasts, Pacaya, Atitlan, Santa Maria and Acatenango are great options. As all of these are active volcanoes, it is advisable to hire a guide.

Travel to the Laguna Lachua, a tropical rainforest in the Coban region. Camping and lodging facilities here allow visitors to escape the hustle-bustle of daily life and become one with nature.

Guatemalan cuisine is largely influenced by the Mayan Civilization with corn, beans and chilli used as staple ingredients. While you are here, Chiles Rellenos (Chilli peppers stuffed with rice, cheese, meat, and vegetables served with tortilla and tomato sauce), Chicken Pepian (a chicken dish with spicy sesame and pumpkin sauce) and Kak’ik (A traditional Mayan turkey soup, with spices like coriander, annatto, and chilli peppers) are must-try delicacies.

Shopping is in the blood of almost every traveller. Local markets and shops are seen in every nook and corner. The Chichicastenango Market in Guatemala City is popular of all. Coffee beans, local spirits, crafts, fabrics and various spices are usually sold.
