Eritrea Travel guide

Eritrea is a country in Eastern Africa bordering Djibouti, Ethiopia, Sudan, and the Red Sea. Eritrea has a strategic location along the world's busiest shipping lanes. The country is bisected by mountain ranges, formed by the processes that formed the Great Rift Valley, with fertile lands to the west descending to desert in the east. The government type is a presidential system; the chief of state and head of government is the president. Eritrea has a command economy in which the central government, controlled by a single political party, directs the economy regarding the production and distribution of goods. Eritrea is a member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. Read more

  • Eritrea’s gross domestic product growth was estimated at around 9% in the 2011-12 period, up from an estimated 2.2% in 2010. The growth was mainly stimulated by the mining sector, the coming on stream of the Bisha mine in 2011 and the historically high gold price prevailing at that time were key drivers. Growth prospects are potentially favourable in the medium term, reflecting the potential of additional mineral resources, especially copper, with favourable international base metal prices.
  • Despite recent growth, Eritrea remains one of the least developed countries in the world. Anecdotal evidence indicates that poverty is still widespread in the country where 65% of the population lives in rural areas and 80% depend on subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods, impacting negatively on human development, which is evident in human-development statistics. In 2012, Eritrea’s Human Development Index at 0.351, was below the average of 0.466 for countries in the Low Human Development group and below the 0.475 average for countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. Rain-fed agriculture is the predominant economic activity employing more than two thirds of the population.
  • Best time to visit Eritrea

  • The best times to visit Eritrea for ideal weather is February 26th to September 30th based on average temperature and humidity from NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Average temperatures in Eritrea vary very little. Considering humidity, temperatures feel very enjoyable all year with a very low chance of rain or snow throughout the year. The area is more temperate than most — in the 87th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above. If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Eritrea, the hottest months are March, February, and then June. The busiest month for tourism in Eritrea is January, followed by November and December. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Eritrea in August. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month. Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel moderate. Highs range from 76.9°F (24.9°C) and 69°F (20.6°C) with colder temperatures in the later months. Rain is non-existent with roughly 0 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the second busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.
  • Time Difference's and Language Barrier:

Eritrea has the 73rd most time zones in the world. India is 2 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Eritrea. The Eritrea people speaks English averagely and nothing much more than that.
  • Transportation:

Eritrea is a small country and there are no passenger services between major settlements. All foreign tourists have to obtain a permit from the Ministry of Tourism in Eritrea to travel outside Asmara. These are usually issued within 24 hours.
  • The main roads are generally in very good condition. Making road travel in standard-drive vehicles between cities relatively comfortable and swift. Minor roads are often unsealed and can be less comfortable, but they are generally well maintained. 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended on all non-main roads and tracks. Travelling on minor roads or off-road in the rainy season is inadvisable as heavy downpours can cause flooding, making tracks impassable and extremely dangerous. You can book cars through the all major travel agents and local hire companies. Although Eritreans love bicycle racing, there are no hire bikes in Eritrea. Towns and cities, including the centre of Asmara, are small enough to walk around comfortably.
  • What to see in Eritrea?

  • Asmara: There are two sides to this capital city. The first things you’ll notice are the lovely walking neighbourhoods, street cafes with delicious Italian coffee, dozens of pastry shops, and a slow pace about town. In short, you’ll feel like you’ve just arrived at a small village somewhere in Italy. But the flip side of this beauty includes some harsh economic conditions like power cuts, deserted streets, and slow business. Despite the two extremes, Asmara is one of the most congenial cities that you’re likely to visit in Africa. You’ll also find the most concentrated collection of Modernist architecture in the world. Most of the historic area has remained untouched since its conception in the 1930’s when Mussolini During the federation with Ethiopia, it was used as a winter palace by Emperor Haile Selassie, whose heraldic lions still decorate the gates and by whose name the building is still commonly referred to.had his eye on Ethiopia. Combine the history, architecture, friendly locals, and eight months of sunshine each year, and you’ll come to love Asmara easily.
  • The Imperial Palace:

Overlooking the harbour just north of the gates of the Dahlak Hotel is the Imperial Palace, the original iteration of which was built by the Turkish Osdemir Pasha in the 16th century. The present building dates from 1872, when it was built for the Swiss adventurer Werner Munzinger.
