Djibouti Travel guide

Djibouti is a tiny country that sits on the horn of Africa along the world’s most important waterways, the Red sea. Djibouti may seem like a mysterious land to many, but tourism is catching up in this part of the world, as people have started arriving to experience the pleasures of Eco travel. From hiking to diving, Djibouti has some exclusive thrills for the adventurous traveller. Read more

  • Djibouti experiences an arid climate characterized by extremely hot and dry weather throughout the year. Precipitation is very low in the region coupled with relatively high humidity. During the months of October up until April, the weather is slightly cooler than the usual as scanty rainfall can be experienced during the time. The best time to visit Djibouti is during December and January as temperature averages around 23C during the time.
  • An interesting fact about the country is its French influence, from its colonization during the 19th century. French is widely spoken in the country and you will even find signboards in French. Arabic is also a commonly used language. Few locals do speak English.
  • Djibouti is one of the safest countries in Africa, partly because of the fact that it is a hub for foreign military bases. It is common to spot police or military on guard in every locality. Remain calm if questioned by one of them. Serious crime against tourists is rarely reported. However, pickpockets are common in crowded areas and markets. So be vigilant with your passport and other valuables.
  • There are no direct flights between India and Djibouti. Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airlines, Etihad, and Air France are some of the international carriers that ply between major Indian cities and Djibouti, with one or more transits in between flights. Private taxis are available from the airport to the city centre. Bicycle rentals are a cheap way to get around the capital city. Bus services and ferry services operate between cities.
  • What to see in Djibouti?

  • Tourism in Djibouti is scarce but the country does have a handful of tourist attractions which are quite unique in their own way. The capital, Djibouti City is a small city which has both French and Arabic quarters adjacent to each other. The mosque, Djibouti's iconic landmark is located in Place Rimbaud. The area has a busy market, hotels, restaurants, bars and everything else to treat yourself in the horn of Africa.
  • Ali Sabieh is the country's second largest town and has the main railway station. This is the place you should be buying water and other refreshments at if you are planning to travel further into the country. A 30-minute boat ride from Ali Sabieh will take you to Moucha Islands on the Gulf of Tadjoura. These secluded coral islands provide a quiet beach with plenty of turquoise water, but limited facilities and people.
  • Just over 100km west of Djibouti city lies one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Africa, Lake Assal. It is Africa's lowest point (155m below sea level) and the saltiest lake outside Antarctica. The place is surrounded by dormant volcanos. There are some stalls here selling goods coated or decorated in salt from the region.
  • Lake Abbe is yet another natural marvel situated towards the Ethiopian border. It is a steaming lake with underground hot springs. The lake is surrounded by limestone chimneys. Travellers have the option of camping at Lake Abbe. Huts with basic facilities are available for spending the night.
  • Swimming with whale sharks is an exhilarating experience Djibouti has to offer. There are scheduled snorkelling trips that take place between mid-October and February which is the breeding season of whale sharks.
