Belarus travel guide

Often mistaken as a part of the Russian territory, Belarus is an independent nation landlocked in the Easter part of Europe sharing its borders with multiple countries. A destination with dating history as well as scenic landscapes is yet to attract inbound visitors. If you plan to explore the Baltic region, make sure Belarus makes it to the list Read more

  • There is no perfect time to visit this country as it largely depends on the traveller’s nature. Months beginning from September till October are characterised by calm winds and pleasant surroundings whereas June and August are not bad periods either although the monsoons kick in which many tourist companies do not recommend. If you love an isolated winter wonderland, make your bookings anytime between November and February.
  • Safety is unlikely to be a concern for visitors. For the most part, Belarus is safe, but petty crimes like theft and pickpocketing are common in crowded spots and markets. Thus, it is advised to remain vigilant and keep safe custody of all personal belongings. In fact, it is best to keep expensive items locked in the hotel room safe. In terms of language, the younger generation is known to speak English. Belarusian and Russian are widely spoken. Practice a few phrases in the native dialect to avoid any confusion during your journey. These days, even Google Translate comes in handy. Otherwise, simply hire a local guide.
  • Getting to Belarus is absolutely hassle-free. Top international carriers such as Etihad Airways, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines and Air India offer consistent weekly flights from various cities in India to Minsk (Capital of Belarus). If you are on a budget, options such as Go Air, Indigo and Spicejet would suffice.
  • What to see in Belarus?

  • Minsk, the capital of Belarus, is home to many historical sites. Visit the Belarusian State Museum, National Library, National Academic Bolshoi (Opera and theatre), Island of Tears and Art Museum, where you can learn about the culture and the past of the country.
  • Visit the Zaslawskaye Reservoir, a beachside picnic area with a scenic view of the horizon, especially during dusk, which attracts a lot of tourists.
  • If you are a nature-lover, do add the Minsk Botanical Garden to your itinerary. This garden is home to a range of rare animal and plant species that cannot be found elsewhere.
  • Tour the Holy Spirit Cathedral. Its 16th-century style architecture is sure to leave you in awe. This Belarusian Orthodox Church is calming and certainly possesses positive vibrations.
  • Not far from Minsk, head north to the Biarezinski Nature Reserve. This protected area is a gem hidden in Europe. Tourists can walk through the trails of animals as well as spot Bison’s, Foxes and Wolfs.
  • Belarusian delicacies are puzzles of your journey, without which your travel is going to look bland. While you are here, do try popular dishes such as Draniki, Kletski, Zurekh, Borscht, Shkvarki and Kasha. Vegetarians need not worry as the cuisine comprises of many non-meat dishes as well.
  • For shopping head to any market square or if you are visiting during festival seasons like Christmas, fancy stores tend to give big discounts. From shoes to cosmetics, the markets sell close to everything. If you are looking for souvenirs; wooden sculptures, Slutsk Belts and Ceramic Pots are usually the ones to buy.
