    Afghanistan travel guide

Not far from India, Afghanistan in Central Asia is highly landlocked with much of its geography comprised of mountains. Its scenic landscapes are worth every penny you spend on getting here. Infamous in travel terms, not many people plan to visit Afghanistan, making it all the more special. Read more

Unlike many other travel destinations, neither summer nor winter seasons here are ideal for a vacation. The months of spring lasting April to June is when the country’s flora blooms and flourishes. September and October months witness fall, which also offer an overall pleasant climate to visit Afghanistan.

Many of you would wonder about tourist safety in Afghanistan due to where it is located. Kabul, the capital, is safe to some extent. Having a personal escort or local tour guide is advised. Dari and Pashto are the official languages. Some communities are bi-lingual and also speak as well as understand a mix of Hindi and Urdu. English speakers are close to none. Cities in India offer direct flights to Afghanistan’s Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. Air India, Spicejet and Air Arabia are the options available. As they fly this route consistently, you can book your travel as per schedule.

    What to see in Afghanistan?

Much of Kabul, the capital city is known for its history. Previously home to many rulers, castles and palaces are sighted in abundance. The Gardens of Babur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by Emperor Babur in the 15th Century as a recreational space, it now serves as a tourist hotspot.

Learn a little history at the National Museum of Afghanistan. It exhibits a wide range of sculptures and models, each with their own connotation.

Visit Pul-e-Khishti Mosque in old Kabul, the biggest in the city, it’s the best opportunity to mingle with the locals. There was a Hindu temple here in this region. Koh-e-Asamai is one of many such that you must travel to. It is located on a hill which also gives travellers beautiful views, especially during dawn and dusk.

In Mazar-i-Sharif, the Blue Mosque is incomparable to its kind. If you happen to visit this city, spend an hour, and I promise that it will leave you in a state of awe.

In the Bayman region, head over to the Band-e Amir National Park. Not easily accessible, but minivan services are available to this area. Its valleys and clear blue waters are complemented by the far off mountains. If you have enough time, do at this to your itinerary. Not far from here, Buddha’s of Bayman is where you can see carved statues of Buddha dating back to the 5th century.

For the Bravehearts and avid hikers, Wakhan is often talked about as one of the unique landscape for trekking. It is not advisable to first timers and especially those who are not physically fit.

In Afghanistan, be it in restaurants or tiny street stalls; maize, barley, wheat and rice are staple ingredients. Kabuli Pulao, Kebabs with minced green chutney, Sheer Khurma (Popular during Ramadan and Eid), Manto (Dumplings) and Poraki (Stuffed bread with vegetables) are some of the tastiest delicacies to try.

Buy from the commodities on display in the city markets. Rugs, ethnic jewellery, woodcarvings, handmade pots and crockery are the souvenirs you could take back home!
