Since 22 September 2025, Indian hotel rooms priced up to ₹7,500 a night carry 5% GST, while pricier ones attract 18%, so the sticker price is never the full story.
A ridiculously cheap hotel room can look like a traveler’s dream. Until the taxi fare doubles, the Wi-Fi barely works, and the bed feels like sleeping on a wooden bench. Ouch! Sometimes, saving money on a room means spending more everywhere else. That’s why smart hotel booking tips aren’t just about finding the lowest price but knowing what actually makes a stay worthwhile.
So, before the next impulsive tap, wade through the best deals on hotel bookings online with a calmer head and see what “cheap” really costs.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Why The Cheapest Room Can Cost You More
1. Hidden Fees and Taxes: Hotel room rates on the screen rarely show the final number. Taxes, a ₹300 “service charge,” a ₹200 “resort fee” for a resort that’s basically a courtyard with a plastic palm… checkout feels like an ambush.
2. Poor Location and Transit Costs: Staying 9 km outside Jaipur’s Pink City (founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, by the way) saves ₹800, then burns ₹900 on autos. Chai-stall smoke, horns, the sweaty 11 p.m. haggling. Last metro? Gone, obviously.
3. The Fine Print Trap: Non-refundable feels clever until a flight gets delayed and the money just vanishes. One of those hotel booking tips worth tattooing on your arm: read the cancellation line twice.
4. Compromised Comfort and Sleep: Thin walls, a groaning AC, a window facing a street where horns start at 5:30 a.m. Tomorrow’s sightseeing energy? Dead.
5. The Missing Essentials: No breakfast, patchy Wi-Fi, a lukewarm shower. Then ₹250 for mediocre idli down the road. Skimpy hotel amenities cost real money later, and honestly, it’s one of the classic hotel booking mistakes.
6. Middleman Markups: Third-party sites sometimes tuck in a markup, and there are no loyalty points or upgrade luck either. Planning a longer trip? Line up the best flight deals online too, so airfare doesn’t swallow whatever you just fought to save.

How To Find True Value Instead
1. Add It All Up: Room, taxes, transfers, breakfast. Total cost, not nightly rate. Simple, yet somehow forgotten every single time. Good hotel booking tips usually start here.
2. Peek One Category Up: Check the hotel room categories one step higher. A ₹600 jump often buys a bigger room, a softer bed, fresh-brewed coffee smell drifting from free breakfast, and a quieter floor. Compare amenities offered by leading hotel brands in India, and be honest about what you’ll actually use (a gym you’ll skip isn’t a perk).
3. Book Direct, Sometimes: Direct bookings can bring flexible cancellation, free upgrades and points. Small hotel booking tips, big difference.
Heading abroad? Sort the paperwork early with online visa services for 180+ countries, so there’s no last-minute panic. And if choosing stays feels like homework, all-inclusive tour packages bundle hotels, transfers and sightseeing into one honest price.
Bottom Line
Cheap isn’t wrong, just incomplete. Use these hotel booking tips, check the total, read the fine print, and actually sleep well.
