Where to go in Singapore

Gardens by the Bay is the one stop nobody skips, and it earns that reputation. The Flower Dome holds the Guinness record for the world's largest glass greenhouse, the Cloud Forest has a 35 metre indoor waterfall, and the Supertree Grove puts on a light and sound show most evenings that is worth timing your visit around.

Sentosa Island is Singapore's answer to a full day theme park destination, with Universal Studios, the S.E.A. Aquarium and several good beaches all on one island connected by cable car, monorail or a short causeway walk.

Marina Bay Sands is where most people take their skyline photo, and the rooftop infinity pool is genuinely worth the hype if you are staying there, though even non guests can visit the observation deck for a similar view.

Orchard Road is Singapore's main shopping stretch, a long run of malls connected by underground tunnels that lets you shop across several buildings without stepping outside once.

Chinatown and Little India are worth an afternoon each, and they show a side of Singapore that Orchard Road and Marina Bay do not. Little India in particular has some of the best value food in the city.

The Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo is one of the few places in the world where you can see nocturnal animals active after dark, and it is a genuinely different experience from a daytime zoo visit.

East Coast Park is a long stretch of coastline popular with locals for cycling and picnics, a good half day option if you want a break from the more touristy sights.

Sample Singapore itineraries

3 nights, 4 days. Ideal if Singapore is one stop on a longer regional trip. A day at Sentosa, a day covering Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, and a final day split between Orchard Road and Chinatown.

4 nights, 5 days. Add either Universal Studios as a full day or the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari as a combined day, plus time in Little India, which most shorter itineraries end up skipping.

Food and what to eat

Singapore takes its food seriously enough that several hawker stalls hold Michelin recognition, and eating at a hawker centre is not a downgrade from a restaurant here, it is often the better meal. Chilli crab and chicken rice are the two dishes most visitors try first, and both are worth seeking out at a proper hawker stall rather than a hotel restaurant version. Little India has some of the best Indian food outside India itself, useful if you want a familiar meal partway through the trip, and most hotels can also arrange vegetarian or Jain meals with a little advance notice. Laksa and char kway teow are both worth trying if you want something a bit further from home.

Shopping in Singapore

Orchard Road is the obvious first stop, a long stretch of malls that lets you compare prices across several stores without much walking outside. Chinatown Street Market is better for souvenirs and gifts at lower prices, and it is worth bargaining a little rather than accepting the first price. Mustafa Centre in Little India stays open 24 hours and is popular with Indian travellers for everything from electronics to gold jewellery. If you are after something more upscale, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands carries the higher end brands.

Best time to visit Singapore

Singapore sits close to the equator, so the weather stays warm and fairly consistent through the year, and there is no real bad season to avoid. November to January sees slightly more rain, though showers tend to be short. If you want to catch the city at its most festive, plan around Diwali in October or November, or Chinese New Year in late January, when Little India and Chinatown are both genuinely worth walking through in the evening. December brings the Orchard Road Christmas light up, one of the better free things to see if you are travelling that month.

Good to know before you go

Visa. Indian passport holders need a visa for Singapore, there is no visa on arrival. The eVisa process is straightforward and usually processed within a week through an authorised agent, and we handle this as part of your booking.

Currency. The Singapore Dollar, SGD. ATMs are everywhere and cards are accepted at almost every establishment, so you do not need to carry much cash.

Language. English is the working language across the city, so there is no real communication barrier for Indian travellers.

Getting around. The MRT covers most of the island and is the fastest, cheapest way to get between the major sights. Taxis and ride hailing apps are also reliable if you are travelling with kids or a lot of luggage.
