Wherever you are flying from, the route to Bali usually runs through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta, since there are no direct flights from India yet. Here is what that looks like from each of our major departure cities.

Bali packages from Kerala. Travellers flying out of Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram usually connect through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, and the total journey runs close to 8 to 9 hours including the layover. Kerala has always been one of our strongest markets for Southeast Asia trips, and Bali fits the pattern well since the tropical scenery feels familiar without feeling repetitive. Where to go in Bali

Ubud is where most people fall in love with Bali. It sits inland, so the pace slows down noticeably once you leave the coast, and the terraced rice paddies around town are worth the short drive on their own. If you have booked a longer trip, say our Best of Bali package, this is where you would spend your quieter middle days.

Seminyak is the pick for couples and honeymooners. The beach clubs here are genuinely good, the restaurant scene is the strongest on the island, and the sunset views rival anywhere in Southeast Asia. Our Bali Honeymoon Special is built around this stretch of coast.

Kuta is where most first time visitors land, and for good reason. It is close to the airport, it is affordable, and Waterbom, Asia's top ranked water park, makes it an easy sell for families with kids.

Nusa Dua trades the nightlife of Kuta and Seminyak for calm. Book this if you are travelling with parents or you simply want a resort holiday without the crowds.

Canggu has become the island's creative hub over the last few years, full of surf breaks, coworking cafes and a younger crowd. It suits travellers who want Bali's laid back side without Kuta's noise.

Sanur is a quieter, more old fashioned beach town on the east coast, popular with families and repeat visitors who have already done the Seminyak circuit once and want something calmer the second time around.

Tanah Lot and Uluwatu are the two temple visits worth building a half day around. Both sit on ocean cliffs, both are best seen at sunset, and both are easy to combine with a Kecak fire dance performance in the evening.

Tegallalang rice terraces, just outside Ubud, are the postcard shot everyone brings home. It is a short stop, but it earns its place on almost every itinerary.

Kintamani and Mount Batur are for the more active traveller. The sunrise trek up Batur takes two to three hours and rewards you with a view over the crater and Lake Batur that is genuinely worth the early start.

Nusa Penida is a day trip by fast boat from Sanur, and the cliffs at Kelingking Beach have become one of the most photographed spots in all of Indonesia. It is a long day, but a memorable one.

Jatiluwih, a UNESCO listed set of rice terraces, gets a fraction of the crowds Tegallalang does and is worth the detour if you already have a car for the day.

Munduk, up in the hills near the northern lakes, is where to go if the coastal heat has worn you out. It is noticeably cooler and a good base for waterfall hikes.

Sample Bali itineraries

4 nights, 5 days. Two nights in Kuta or Seminyak for the beach, one day trip to Ubud for the rice terraces and Monkey Forest, and a final evening back on the coast for sunset at Tanah Lot. This is roughly what our Bali Free and Easy package covers.

5 nights, 6 days. Add a day to properly explore Ubud, including the Tegallalang terraces, and build in either the Uluwatu temple and Kecak dance or a half day at Waterbom if you are travelling with kids.

Food and what to eat

Balinese food leans heavily on rice, grilled meats and a lot of fresh chilli, and it is worth trying nasi goreng, babi guling if you eat pork, and mie goreng at least once during your trip. Bali also has a genuinely strong vegetarian and vegan scene, largely thanks to its yoga and wellness tourism, so vegetarian travellers will find far more options here than in most of Southeast Asia. Ubud in particular has entire streets built around healthy cafes and smoothie bowls. If you want something familiar partway through the trip, both Seminyak and Kuta have a decent number of Indian restaurants, and most hotels can arrange vegetarian or Jain meals with a bit of advance notice.

Shopping in Bali

Ubud's market is the obvious first stop for handicrafts, wood carvings and sarongs, though it is worth bargaining since the first price quoted is rarely the final one. Seminyak has better options if you are after resort wear, jewellery or homeware from the island's growing number of boutique designers. Kuta's shopping streets are more mixed, useful for beachwear and souvenirs at lower prices. Coffee is also worth bringing home, Bali grows some genuinely good arabica in the highlands around Kintamani.

Best time to visit Bali

May to October is Bali's dry season and the best window for beach days, hiking and general sightseeing. It is also the busiest and most expensive stretch, especially in July and August, so book your Bali package early if you are travelling then. November to April brings more rain, but showers tend to be short and fall in the afternoon rather than ruining the whole day, and hotel rates drop noticeably during this window. February is usually the cheapest month to fly, and a good option if you are travelling on a tighter budget and do not mind the occasional wet afternoon.

Good to know before you go

Visa. Indian passport holders get 30 day visa free entry to Indonesia. You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date with two blank pages, a return or onward ticket, and confirmed accommodation details.

Currency. The Indonesian Rupiah, IDR. ATMs are widely available in tourist areas, though it is worth carrying some cash for smaller vendors and markets since card payments usually carry a conversion fee.

Language. Bahasa Indonesia is the official language, with Balinese spoken locally, but English is understood almost everywhere tourists go.

Getting around. Most visitors hire a private driver for the trip or rent a scooter for short distances. Public transport outside Denpasar is limited, so plan on one of these two options.

Packing tips. Light, breathable clothing works for most of the trip, but carry something to cover your shoulders and knees for temple visits, since Tanah Lot and Uluwatu both enforce a dress code and will hand you a sarong if you show up without one.
