Why Is The Rise In Domestic Airfare Making Festive Flights Costly?

Flying home for the festivities? Your flight ticket may cost more than expected this year.

With the holiday season approaching, millions of people across India want to fly home and meet their families. With the high demand for travel, travellers are now seeing a significant rise in domestic airfare. Finding the best flight booking deals has become very important for families who want to travel on a reasonable budget. Right before festivals like Diwali, Chhath Puja, and Christmas, domestic airfares jump by more than fifty per cent on several busy routes, with fares rising by up to 68% on some routes. Popular flights between cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata now cost much more than they did just a few weeks ago.

Many people wonder why tickets have become so costly all of a sudden. The answer is very simple: supply and demand. Airlines have fewer planes in the air this season, but a very large number of passengers want to book seats on the exact same days. When many people try to buy only a few open seats, ticket prices climb quickly. This explains the sudden rise in domestic airfare that travellers are seeing today.

Fuel prices are also high, making the airplane more expensive for the airline companies to fly. There is no set limit on ticket prices set by the government, so computer systems automatically raise fares as seats fill up. This sharp increase in domestic airfare means that people who wait until the last minute may end up paying much more than usual. While last-minute flight deals may sometimes be available, they can be difficult to find during the busy festive period. Even a simple one-way ticket to a hometown can take a large part of a family’s holiday savings.
