Flying long distances often means juggling different airline accounts, points, and rules. That may soon get easier. Etihad Airways and Southwest Airlines announce loyalty partnership, and it is expected to start in Spring 2027. The idea is simple: members of both loyalty programmes will get more ways to earn and spend their rewards.
If an Abu Dhabi or US trip is already on the travel list, it may help to watch out for the best Etihad Airways flight deals while planning dates around the new partnership.

The Etihad Guest Loyalty Programme and Southwest’s Rapid Rewards program will be linked from Spring 2027. Etihad Guest members will be able to earn Etihad Guest Miles on eligible Southwest flights. They can also redeem these miles for reward travel across Southwest’s network in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Rapid Rewards members will get the reverse benefit. They can earn points on eligible Etihad flights and use them for travel across Etihad’s global network. This includes newer destinations such as Krabi, Zanzibar, and Hanoi.
In other words, Etihad and Southwest link loyalty programmes from 2027, giving travellers more flexibility when they fly between long-haul routes and US domestic journeys.
Planning an international trip also means sorting out visa requirements in advance. If the US is on your itinerary, applying early can help avoid last-minute stress. With online visa services for 180+ countries, you can check requirements and apply from home.

Why This Matters

Etihad, Southwest launch loyalty partnership is a positive step for travellers who like collecting points but want more choice when redeeming them. Etihad operates direct flights from Abu Dhabi to several US cities, including New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington, Atlanta, and Charlotte. It also has a direct flight to Toronto in Canada. For travellers connecting to other US destinations, Southwest’s large domestic network could become a useful add-on.
Etihad Guest Miles can already be used for flights, cabin upgrades, hotel stays, holidays, and products through the Etihad Guest Reward Shop. Rapid Rewards members can earn points on all fares and redeem them for any available seat on Southwest-operated flights. Southwest also says its points do not expire and there are no blackout dates.
For anyone planning a longer holiday, comparing best deals on hotel bookings online early can make the overall trip budget easier to manage. And travellers who prefer a ready-made holiday instead of planning every part separately, all-inclusive tour packages can be worth checking once the flight and stay are sorted.
Conclusion
This is one of those airline partnerships that will not change fares immediately, but it could make reward travel more practical. As Etihad Airways and Southwest Airlines announce their loyalty partnership, further details, including earning and redemption rules, are expected to be available on Etihad’s official website closer to the launch.
