Schengen Visa Goes Digital

The European Union is making big changes to the way people apply for a Schengen visa. By 2028, the Schengen visa will become fully digital. This means you won’t need to fill out paper forms or get a sticker in your passport. With the new system, you can fill out your application and upload your documents online. If your visa is approved, you will get a digital barcode that you can show at the airport when you arrive in Europe. If you are applying for a Schengen visa for the first time, you must still go to the visa center in person to give your fingerprints and take a photo. After that, future applications can be done fully online for almost 5 years.

Spain To Introduce Digital Nomad Visa

In another visa news update from Europe, Spain has launched a digital nomad visa for non-European Union citizens, including Indians, costing just ₹8,000 (about €75). This visa allows remote workers, freelancers, or self-employed professionals earning most of their income from outside Spain to live and work in the country for up to one year, with extension options available. At least 80% of your income must come from outside Spain. This Spain visa program offers an easy and affordable way to enjoy Spain’s culture, weather, and lifestyle while working legally from anywhere in the country.

US Makes In-Person Interviews Mandatory

Starting September 2, 2025, the US will end most non-immigrant US visa interview waivers. This means nearly all applicants, including students, must attend in-person interviews at US consulates. Age-based exemptions for children under 14 and adults over 79 will also end. Only limited groups, such as diplomats and some renewing visitor visa holders who meet strict rules, will still qualify for waivers. With this policy shift, visa processing times may increase. Students and travelers are advised to prepare for mandatory interviews and ensure their documents are in order. This move marks a stricter, more detailed review process for US visa applicants.

The new visa policy is expected to boost tourism and people-to-people connections between India and China. Indians too can apply for China visas, as China lifted tourist visa restrictions for Indian citizens in March 2025.
