The UAE Dirham symbol unveiling was done on 27th March 2025 by the CBUAE. The new Dirham symbol is as powerful as the UAE, with two horizontal lines that signify the stable nature of the country. The letter D used in the symbol is taken from the English name Dirham. This new symbol draws great inspiration from the UAE’s flag to enhance every user’s financial stability. The digital Dirham has a much more modern look, with a circular design around the letter D and carries the colours of the UAE flag- red, green, and black. The colours make it easily identifiable and showcase the country’s pride. Its beautiful, pointed curves mimic the Arabic calligraphic script. It is constructed on blockchain technology, which will increase efficiency, enhance privacy, reduce transaction costs, and reduce risks.
The plans to introduce the new Dirham symbol have been in preparation since 2023, and the symbol is expected to take over the retail sector by late 2025. This initiative was formed under the Financial Infrastructure Transformation (FIT) Programme.
