If you thought the Eiffel Tower was tall, here’s the new Kashmir rail link, which is much taller than the symbol of love! For India, this new rail link is no small feat, acting as a connecting link between Kashmir and India’s railway network. This Katra-Kashmir rail project connection has exceeded all expectations, emerging as the world’s highest railway arch bridge and boosting connectivity, as per the Katra-Banihal rail line update.

On 6th June 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Chenab Rail Bridge to inaugurate it. The PM will flag off a Vande Bharat train that will go along the Katra to Kashmir Valley rail link on Friday. Will you be securing cheap flights to Srinagar to see it and ride the first train on 7th June?

If you don’t already know why India’s being applauded for making history with its Katra-Kashmir rail project, here’s a closer look at the engineering brilliance behind the bridge and the planning that went into constructing the Kashmir Rail Project, which is easily the star in 2025!

What makes the bridge that will connect the train to Kashmir from Katra so special? According to the engineers on site, the Kashmir Rail link portion of the network was the biggest challenge to construct.

The bridge we’re talking about will connect Delhi to Kashmir via Katra. It now stands at a towering height of 359 meters (1,178 feet) over the riverbed! This feature of the entire Kashmir rail link project is the most impressive of all, acting as the rail for Vande Bharat trains between Katra and Srinagar. Some other features of the Kashmir rail link are:

  • Chenab Bridge is a steel bridge made of 30,000 metric tonnes of material.
  • The bridge is stronger than the Eiffel Tower, as it does not move an inch, even with winds blowing at a speed of 250 km per hour! It can also withstand high-magnitude earthquakes.
  • The Kashmir Rail Link project, as a whole, has 1,000 bridges and 36 tunnels, each 119 km long.
  • An electric engine will run along the Katra Srinagar railway, which will get its electric power from overhead equipment using metal stanchions instead of wires.

The engineers put their heart and soul into its construction, which was tedious since the Katra to Banihal railway line map passes through a fault zone where varied geological zones meet. Live security systems are installed throughout to ensure everything runs smoothly at all times. The tracks are ready; however, the final Kashmir Railway station list has yet to be released.

The Sweet Fruit of Three Decades

The 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway line (USBRL) was launched way back in 1997. The ideas for construction came from the Dogra Rulers of the 19th century, so do you wonder why is PM Modi to inaugurate Kashmir Rail Link almost after three decades?

Over the years, multiple ideas for the Kashmir rail project map were considered; however, India did not have the required technology for its construction. The Kashmir rail link project was only revived six decades later by Indira Gandhi, but it remained incomplete as the estimated costs had shot up to 300 crores. This was followed by:

  • Rs.2,500 crore Baramulla to Udhampur project planning foundation laid by I K Gujral and H D Deve Gowda, Prime Ministers in 1996 and 1997.
  • In 1997, costs skyrocketed to Rs.43,800 crore due to the tricky geological landscape.
  • The stretch was declared a national project in 2002 and completed in phases:
  • Quazigund – Baramulla in 2009
  • Banihal – Banihal in 2013
  • Udhampur – Katra in 2014
  • Banihal – Quazigund in 2023
  • Katra – Sangaldhan in 2024

As the Katra-Banihal railway line deadline has finally reached its fulfilment, how do you think this will change India’s future for the better? As per reports, we already see that the construction of roads to transport materials has made lives easier for 1.5 lakh Indians across 70 remote village areas!

Before Kashmir flight tickets shoot up in price, as locals flock to see this marvel, it’s your chance to book all-inclusive Kashmir tour packages and the best hotels in Kashmir for an exciting vacation!
