The first thing I noticed about Aci Trezza was how quiet the sea sounded at night. Not silent, Sicily is never really silent, but calmer than I expected. We were staying near the Riviera dei Ciclopi, in one of those simple sea-facing rooms where the curtains never fully close because the breeze keeps moving them. It was late May, almost summer trip season, and every evening the light stretched longer across the water.

One night, after walking back from dinner, my partner casually said, “Tomorrow morning, let’s just wake up and sit by the rocks for sunrise.” No plans, no alarms set aggressively like tourists trying to maximize itineraries. Just a simple idea.

That sunrise travel experience became the highlight of our entire Europe trip.

Aci Trezza itself feels different from the busy Italy people imagine from movies. It’s a small fishing town near Catania, famous for the volcanic rock formations rising dramatically from the Ionian Sea. Locals call them the Cyclops Rocks, tied to old Greek mythology about Polyphemus. During our Sicily travel days, we visited Taormina, Syracuse, and Catania too, but Aci Trezza stayed with me because it felt lived-in rather than curated.

The next morning, the sky was still dark blue when we walked down toward the black lava rocks. A fisherman was already sorting nets nearby while a couple of runners passed us speaking rapid Italian. We sat quietly with takeaway coffee balanced dangerously on uneven stone.

And then slowly, the horizon changed.

Not dramatically at first. Just soft orange behind the sea. Then pink reflections started touching the volcanic rocks, and suddenly the entire coastline looked painted. I’ve had good sunrise travel experience moments before in India, especially in the mountains, but this felt different because of the contrast between the rugged black rocks and the warm Mediterranean light.

My partner kept taking photos while I honestly just stared blankly for a while. As someone who enjoys travel photography, I realized some views are almost annoying because cameras flatten them too much.

That morning gave us one of those peaceful travel moments you don’t really plan for.

A Note to Sicily

What surprised me about Sicily was how unpolished parts of it felt. Europe is often imagined as perfectly organized, but honestly, our flight to Rome, Italy was delayed for hours, luggage took forever, and one train connection during our Sicily travel route got confusing enough that we almost boarded the wrong regional line. One small family-run café owner insisted we try their homemade cannoli because “tourists only eat the famous ones.” He wasn’t wrong.

Among all the scenic destinations we visited, I honestly found some famous spots slightly overhyped. Taormina was beautiful but crowded beyond comfort. Meanwhile, tiny corners of Aci Trezza, especially near the rocky waterfront at dawn, felt like hidden nature escapes.

Back to the Routine

Even now, when I think about the most beautiful sunrise I witnessed while traveling, I don’t remember only the colors. I remember the cold sea breeze, the sound of waves hitting volcanic stone, my partner laughing because our coffees almost spilled, and that strange feeling of realizing your first Europe trip was becoming an unforgettable sunrise experience in real time.

If anyone asks me about things to do in Sicily now, I always say: wake up early at least once in Aci Trezza. Don’t over-plan it. Just sit near the sea and let Sicily mesmerise you through a sunrise travel experience, you’ll probably carry home forever.
