Kannur, also known as Cannanore in English, Kannanur in Arabic, and Cananor in Portuguese, is a city and a Municipal Corporation in Kerala, India. It is the administrative seat of the Kannur district and is located 274 kilometers (170 miles) north of Kochi, India’s largest port city and commercial hub, and 137 kilometers (85 miles) south of Mangalore, India’s largest port city and commercial hub. Kannur was known as Cannanore during British colonial control in India, when it was a part of the Malabar District (Madras Presidency).

Kannur was the capital of Kolathunadu, one of the four most powerful dynasties on the Malabar Coast, which included the Zamorin of Calicut, the Kingdom of Cochin, and the Kingdom of Quilon. In the late medieval period, the Arakkal kingdom ruled over Kannur and the Laccadive Islands. Kannur, along with the municipalities of Thalassery, Kozhikode, Palakkad, and Fort Kochi, was established on November 1, 1866, under the British Indian Empire’s Madras Act 10 of 1865 (Amendment to the Improvements in Towns Act 1850), making them the state’s first modern municipalities. In the year 2015, it was promoted to a municipal corporation.
