The national airline of the United Kingdom is British Airways (BA). Its headquarters are near Heathrow Airport, which acts as its principal hub, in London, England.

After the British government established a British Airways Board in 1974 to administer the two nationalized airline firms, British Overseas Airways Corporation and British European Airways, as well as two regional carriers, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines, BA was formed. All four firms amalgamated on March 31, 1974, to establish British Airways. BA was privatized in February 1987, after nearly 13 years as a state-owned enterprise, as part of the Conservative government’s larger privatization strategy. British Caledonian, Dan-Air, and British Midland International were all acquired by the carrier in 1987, 1992, and 2012.
British Airways has a fleet of 253 planes with 47 more on order as of July 2021. BA flies a combination of Airbus narrow and wide-body planes, as well as Boeing wide-body planes such the 777 and 787. British Airways’ 747-400 fleet will be retired in October 2020. It was one of the largest 747 operators, having operated the -100, -200, and -400 aircraft from 1974. (1969 with BOAC).
