What you will actually see in Thailand

Bangkok is a good place to start, because the direct flight lands you in the capital. The Grand Palace is the headline, Wat Pho has the giant reclining Buddha, and Wat Arun is at its best at sunset from across the river. Chatuchak Weekend Market is large enough to need a plan, so pick your hours and your budget before you go.

Pattaya is about two hours from Bangkok by road and a popular add on for families and groups. Safari World and Marine Park, the Sanctuary of Truth, and the boat trip to Coral Island are the daytime highlights, and Walking Street covers the evenings.

Phuket is where most beach trips go. Patong is the busiest, Kata and Karon are calmer, and the Big Buddha and Phuket Old Town round out a free afternoon. Island hopping to Phi Phi and Maya Bay is a full day and worth it.

Krabi is quieter, with limestone cliffs and clear water. Railay Beach and Phra Nang are reached by boat, and the four island trip is a relaxed way to spend a day.

Koh Samui and Hua Hin are good to know about if Phuket feels too busy. Samui has a slower pace and Hua Hin is a quiet beach town popular with families.

Chiang Mai is the northern city for temples, markets and ethical elephant sanctuaries. Avoid it from mid February to early April when smoke affects air quality.

A sample 5 night itinerary from Mumbai
