What you will actually see in Thailand

Bangkok is where most trips begin or end. The Grand Palace and Wat Arun are best visited early, before the heat and the crowds build. In the evening, a Chao Phraya river cruise is a relaxed way to see the city lit up, and Chatuchak Weekend Market is the place for souvenirs and clothes at far better prices than the malls.

Phuket is the easiest beach choice. Patong has the nightlife, Kata and Karon are quieter, and Phuket Old Town is a good afternoon away from the sand. The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is an ethical alternative to riding elephants if you want to see them up close.

Krabi is quieter and more scenic, with limestone cliffs, clear water and a slower pace. Railay Beach and Phra Nang are both reached by boat, and island hopping to Poda and Chicken Island is one of the best half day trips in the country.

Phi Phi Island and Maya Bay are usually done as a day trip from Phuket or Krabi. The water is some of the clearest in Thailand, and early morning is the time to go before the day boats arrive.

Pattaya is closest to Bangkok and works well as an add on for shorter trips. It leans towards nightlife and family attractions such as Safari World and Marine Park rather than quiet beaches.

Chiang Mai in the north is a completely different side of Thailand, with temples, a night bazaar and hill villages. Avoid mid February to early April, when crop burning affects air quality.

A sample 5 night itinerary from Delhi

Day 1. Fly direct from Delhi to Phuket or Bangkok, check in and spend the evening on the beach or in the city.

Day 2. Island hopping to Phi Phi and Maya Bay with a seafood lunch on board.

Day 3. Free morning, then Phuket Old Town and a Thai massage in the afternoon.

Day 4. Fly or drive to Krabi, with a boat trip to Railay Beach.

Day 5. Poda and Chicken Island half day, then free time.

Day 6. Return flight to Delhi.

Food. Vegetarian food is easier to find than in many neighbouring countries, and most restaurants adjust spice levels on request. Hotels can arrange vegetarian or Jain meals with advance notice.
