What you will actually see in Thailand

Phuket is the default choice for a first beach trip. It has the widest range of hotels, the easiest transfers from the airport, and enough variety that couples and families can both find a base they like. Patong is the loud, busy end, while Kata and Karon are calmer and better for children.

Phi Phi Island and Maya Bay are the day trip everyone does from Phuket, and for good reason. The water is very clear and the limestone cliffs are striking. Go on the earliest boat you can, before the day crowds arrive.

Krabi is the quieter alternative, with cliffs, longtail boats and less nightlife. Railay Beach is only reachable by boat, which keeps it calm, and the four island boat trip around Poda and Chicken Island is one of the best days out in the country.

Bangkok works well at the start or end of a trip. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun are the three temples to prioritise, the river cruise at dusk is a gentle way to see the city, and street food in the Old Town is where the best meals tend to happen.

Pattaya is the nearest beach town to Bangkok and suits shorter trips. Safari World and the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden are the family favourites, and the Coral Island day trip is an easy add on.

Chiang Mai is worth adding if you have 7 nights or more. The old city temples, a day at an ethical elephant sanctuary and the Sunday walking street market give a very different feel from the coast.

A sample 4 night itinerary from Bangalore
