Places to visit on your Sri Lanka Trip

If what places to visit in Sri Lanka is your question then you don’t need to worry about it. As Akbar Holidays answers this question for you

Listed are the places you must definitely have in your Sri Lanka holiday package

    Yala National Park

Around Yala, there are three wildlife sanctuaries and six national parks. National Park Lunugamvehera is one of the biggest. The northeast monsoon is when the park receives the majority of its rainfall because it is located in a dry, semi-arid climate region. Yala is home to a variety of ecosystems, including freshwater and marine wetlands as well as moist monsoon forests. It is one of Sri Lanka's 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs). Six Sri Lankan indigenous bird species are among the 215 bird species found in Yala. The park features 44 mammals that have been identified, and it boasts one of the greatest numbers of leopards in the world.

Several ancient civilizations have lived in the Yala region. Sithulpahuwa and Magul, two significant pilgrimages are located within the park

    Sigiriya

There are 169 kilometers between Colombo and Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa. In 1982, Sigiriya was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sigiriya is well-known for its palace ruins, which are perched atop a towering 200-meter-high rock and are encircled by the remnants of a vast network of gardens, reservoirs, and other buildings.

The actual rock is a lava plug from a long-extinct old volcano. It is famed for its ancient frescoes, which are comparable to those found in India's Ajanta Caves. However, it is generally acknowledged that the Sigiriya Frescoes show a distinctively Sri Lankan style. Prehistoric times may have seen habitation at Sigiriya.

Beginning in the fifth century BC, it served as a rock-shelter mountain monastery, with caves prepared and donated by followers of the Buddhist Sangha. The Sigiriya Museum exhibits images of the site's excavation, copies of the frescoes, illustrations, and translations of some of the graffiti on the Mirror Wall, and artifacts found there. In roughly an hour, you can probably see the entire museum. Because the museum is outside the front door,

    Watching whales

When you go on a whale/dolphin viewing tour of the Southern, Eastern, or West coast of Sri Lanka, the ever-smiling, mischievous dolphins will put on a show while some of the oldest and largest marine creatures, the humpback and the blue whales, will casually glide past you. Dondra Point, which is reachable from Galle, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, and Trincomalee are the best places to see whales, while the waters off Kalpitiya are teeming with dolphins.

Whale watching at Mirissa will be safer this season thanks to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard.

The Sri Lanka Coast Guards have heightened their vigilance in observing the application of the Sea Mammals Observation, Regulation, and Control Regulations since the Mirissa whale viewing season is in full swing and numerous local and foreign tourists are congregating in the Mirissa harbour.Members of the Rohana Coast Guard post had been observing whale and dolphin watching operations in Mirissa since last year to make sure that boat operators and passengers engaging in whale watching abided by the Regulations. The coast guards also ensure that passengers, crew members, and boat operators follow all safety procedures and laws both before and after their observation tour.

Places to visit on your Sri Lanka Trip from India

    • Munneshwaram Temple

One of Sri Lanka's and the Rameswaram islands' five principal Shiva temples is the Munneshwaram Kovil, which is adjacent to Chilaw. known as Ishvarams. The temple is located where, according to a Tamil tradition, King Rama prayed to Shiva after committing the most serious offence against Hindu law—killing a priest, or Brahmahast—because Ravana, who Rama had to murder to free Sita, belonged to the Brahmin caste. Due to his perception that the Doshana sin was not pursuing him at this location, Rama stopped the Vimana vehicle at Munneswaram. He then left the vimana and prayed to God Shiva, pleading for a solution. Rama was advised by Shiva to erect four lingams at the Manavari, Trinco, Mannar, and Rameswaram for this purpose

    • Manavari Temple

After committing Brahmincide by slaying the Brahmin King Ravana, Lord Rama initially constructed a Lingam in Manavari, about 6 km north of Chilaw, as an atonement to Lord Shiva. Because Lord Rama created this Shiva Lingam in Manavari, it is known as the Ramalingam. Only two Lingams in the entire globe bear the name of Lord Rama; the other is located in Rameswaram, India. Go to Dambulla now.

    • Thirukonneshwaram

A beautiful temple called Thirukonneshwaram can be found in Trincomalee on a rocky outcropping. Lord Shiva, who was moved by King Ravana's devotion, gave Rishi Agastya the order to construct it. The Lord constructed a temple for his followers as payment for his devotion, making this location special in this regard. It is said that Lord Rama prayed here as well in order to remove the Brahmahathi Dosham, or curse, associated with killing Ravana because he was a Brahmin. The renowned temple built here during the illustrious period of the Tamil Pallava, Chola, and Pandya empires was destroyed between 1622 and 1624 by intolerant Portuguese Christians.

    • Sri Shankari Devi Shakthi Peedam

There is another shrine next to the well-known Koneswaram temple in

    Trincomalee;

Despite being modest, Hindu pilgrims see some meaning in it. This Shankari Devi temple was rebuilt at a different location. The first Ashta Dasha (18) Shakti Pita on Adi Shankara's list was the original Shankari Devi temple, which is thought to have been constructed by Ravana; however, Portuguese cannonballs obliterated the entire cliff that the temple was built into. Now, there is only a memorial pillar standing there. And it's thought that the original Goddess idol has been replaced and maintained, and is currently worshipped in the neighboring rebuilt Shankari Devi temple.

    • Kanniyai:

Only around 10 miles from Trincomalee town, the hot wells of Kanniyai or Kanniya are adjacent to the main route to Anuradhapura. The healing abilities of pilgrims are revered. There are numerous myths that explain how these therapeutic hot water wells came to be, and the majority of them include Ravana. One legend regarding

According to the legend of Kanniya, this is the location where King Ravana performed the funeral rites for his mother. When he couldn't get water to properly carry out the rites, he became enraged and drove his Trishula seven times into the earth. Water quickly began to pour out. When Ravana's rage subsided, the extremely hot water cooled to the current level. Each of the seven wells has a different water temperature.

    FAQs

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination as the country doesn’t experience extreme monsoon when it comes to weather conditions. Whenever you go, there is always a place that is worth visiting. December to March is the perfect time for visiting most of the country when popular places have their tourist-friendly weather. However, the best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on other factors, such as which part of the country you wish to visit, local festivals etc. There are limitless things for you to explore in this enthralling island nation anytime during the year.

What are the cheapest flight options for Sri Lanka?

Sri Lankan Airlines is the country’s national carrier. Major airlines flying to Sri Lanka are Spicejet, Indigo and Air India. Akbartravels.com offers lowest airfares to Sri Lanka from all major cities in India.

Do I need a visa to enter Sri Lanka?

Yes, all Indian passport holders intending to visit Sri Lanka for short term purpose must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the country. The Sri Lanka Visa ETA is an online system which provides official authorization for short visits (up to 30 days), and is issued electronically (online). Travelers can apply for the Sri Lanka ETA at least two (2) months prior to the intended date of travel.

How much time is required in Sri Lanka for sightseeing?

Sri Lanka’s compact size and the accessibility of most major attraction means that even a week will allow you to visit a number of different places.
