FAQs
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination as the country doesn’t experience extreme monsoon when it comes to weather conditions. Whenever you go, there is always a place that is worth visiting. December to March is the perfect time for visiting most of the country when popular places have their tourist-friendly weather. However, the best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on other factors, such as which part of the country you wish to visit, local festivals etc. There are limitless things for you to explore in this enthralling island nation anytime during the year.
Sri Lankan Airlines is the country’s national carrier. Major airlines flying to Sri Lanka are Spicejet, Indigo and Air India. Akbartravels.com offers lowest airfares to Sri Lanka from all major cities in India.

Yes, all Indian passport holders intending to visit Sri Lanka for short term purpose must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the country. The Sri Lanka Visa ETA is an online system which provides official authorization for short visits (up to 30 days), and is issued electronically (online). Travelers can apply for the Sri Lanka ETA at least two (2) months prior to the intended date of travel.
Sri Lanka’s compact size and the accessibility of most major attraction means that even a week will allow you to visit a number of different places. But to experience the island wholly, a two-week stay is worthwhile. Our Sri Lanka Holiday Experts can guide you with the best itineraries based on your budget and travel needs.
The best things to do in Sri Lanka are:

- See the Legendary Stilt Fishermen (stick fishing)
- Take a Scenic Train Ride from Kandy to Ella
- Elephant Safari in Kaudulla National Park
- Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy
- Relax on the Empty Beaches of Beruwala
- Hike up to Diyaluma Falls
- Go Surfing at Hikkaduwa
- Wander Amidst the Tea Plantations
Do a Pilgrimage to Adam’s Peak or Sri Pada
Though Sri Lanka holiday packages usually include transfers from the airport to the hotel, plenty of taxis are available for independent travelers who seek transport to their hotel. Local transport comes in the form of trishaws (much like tuktuks) for shorter journeys, and a dependable network of colourful busses for the longer ones. However trishaws, or 'tuk tuks' are probably the most convenient way to make short journeys around the island, and can be found all over the country. We’d recommend a chauffeur-driven car as the most comfortable way of getting around Sri Lanka.
The national currency is Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). One Sri Lankan rupee consists of 100 Sri Lanka cents and the currency notes comprise of Rs. 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 notes. Commonly used coins are 1 rupee, 2 rupees, 5 rupees and 10 rupees. Most of the major places accept debit and credit cards. The two most widely used cards are Visa and Mastercard. On Akbartravels.com you can find the up-to-date exchange rate.
Sri Lanka is a very child-friendly country. The country offers plenty of fun activities and adventures to entertain the kids. Right from national parks to safaris and water sports, there is not a single moment of boredom. Whether you’re a family taking your kids for their first adventure or you’re a hardcore seasoned traveling family, Sri Lanka ticks all the boxes – very kid friendly and safe. Most of the Sri Lankan dishes are based on rice, fish, and lots of vegetables and fruits. Rice is the staple food of Sri Lankan people consumed with curries (eggplant, potato, green banana, chicken and fish) that range from delicately-spiced to fiery hot. There are also hoppers (a pancake-like snack), string hoppers (steamed rice noodles) and pittu (flour and coconut mixture). Lamprais – rice and accompaniments baked in plantain leaves – is a legacy of the Dutch. Though a little piquant for foreign tastes, Sri Lankan food is quite good making your trip a journey of culinary discovery.
Sri Lanka has a warm tropical temperature throughout the year. So you are recommended to carry lightweight light coloured clothes best suited for the weather. However, if you are heading towards hilly areas, pack in some warm clothes as the weather tends to get a little chilly in the evening.
Tamil and Sinhalese are the most commonly spoken languages of Sri Lanka. However, English too is generally understood by most people and is used in all major hotels, restaurants and shops.
WI-FI is widely available and can be accessed at the hotels, resorts, guest houses, cafes, and restaurants in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is also an excellent shopping destination for tourists who wish to buy clothes, household items, tea and spices. It is also worthwhile to purchase items unique to a specific area when travelling out of Colombo. For example, Galle is famous for its traditional hand-made lace, Veveldeniya is famous for its handwoven reed ware such as reed baskets and Ambalagoda is famous for its traditional masks. Other goods that are worth buying are tea, spices, hand-looms, carvings and gems such as moonstones.
No, liquor and smoking in public is prohibited in Sri Lanka. This ban includes all enclosed public places such as clubs and restaurants. However, you can find regular comfort stops to alleviate the craving.
