About Madurai

Madurai is the capital of Tamil Nadu, an Indian state. It is the administrative center of Madurai District and the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. It was the third most populous urban agglomeration in Tamil Nadu, after Chennai and Coimbatore, and the 44th most populous city in India, according to the 2011 census. Madurai, which is on the banks of the Vaigai River, has been an important settlement for over two millennia. It is known as “Thoonga Nagaram,” which means “the city that never sleeps.”

Madurai is closely identified with the Tamil language, and the city is supposed to have hosted the third Tamil Sangam, a major gathering of Tamil intellectuals. The city’s recorded history dates back to the 3rd century BCE, when Megasthenes, the Greek envoy to the Maurya kingdom, and Kautilya, a Mauryan ruler Chandragupta Maurya’s minister, noted it. Excavations by the Archeological Survey of India in Manalur have revealed evidence of human dwellings and Roman trade contacts reaching back to 300 BCE.

The city is thought to be ancient, and it has been ruled by the Pandyas, Cholas, Madurai Sultanate, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Carnatic monarchy, and the British East India Company British Raj at various times.
