As early as the 7th century, the temple was mentioned in poems sung by ancient saints. The ancient temple was destroyed during Malik Kapur’s invasion in 1310. The temple was repaired after Hindu monarchs reclaimed power, and the current shape is a contribution by the Nayaks who ruled Madurai during the 16th and 18th centuries. The thousand pillar hall is one of the temple’s most magnificent creations, and it is known for its architectural brilliance. It’s the temple’s museum, and the statues are magnificent.

This cave temple is dedicated to the element of earth, one of the five elements, and this hill is referred to as the ‘Southern Himalaya’ in many Tamil classical scriptures. It may surprise you to hear that the hill is home to both a Murugan temple and an Islamic shrine devoted to Sekunder. The architecture is just stunning.

After Gandhiji’s killing, the Gandhi Museum was built in his honor. Nayak Queen Rani built the edifice that now houses the museum in 1670 AD. In 1959, the building was finished and opened to the public. Gandhiji’s visual biography is shown in the museum’s Picture Gallery. In the Special Exhibition section, 265 images reflect the history of the struggle for freedom. The ‘Hall of Relics’ houses some of Gandhi’s personal things, both original and copies.
