Kozhikode, commonly known as Calicut in English, is a city in Kerala, India. It is the state’s second-largest metropolitan area. According to the 2011 census, it is also the country’s 19th largest city, with a population of two million people. The Government of India has designated Kozhikode as a Tier 2 city.
It was the capital of the British-era Malabar district and is the largest city in the Malabar region. For its significance as a key trading location for Indian spices in antiquity and the medieval period, Kozhikode was dubbed the City of Spices. It was the seat of the Samoothiris, who governed an autonomous country (Zamorins). Kozhikode was voted the second greatest city to live in in India in 2009, according to statistics provided by economics research firm Indicus Analytics on residences, earnings, and investments.
Calicut International Airport (IATA: CCJ, ICAO: VOCL), commonly known as Karipur Airport, is a major international airport in Kerala, India. It is located in Karipur, Malappuram district. Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Palakkad are all part of the Malabar area. It is 28 kilometers from Kozhikode and 25 kilometers from Malappuram. It serves the Kozhikode metropolitan region and the Malappuram metropolitan area, two of the state’s seven metropolitan areas. The airport first opened its doors on April 13, 1988. The airport acts as a hub for Air India Express, which offers Hajj Pilgrimage services from Kerala to Medina and Jeddah. In terms of overall passenger traffic, it was India’s eighth busiest airport. After Kochi, it is Kerala’s second busiest airport. On February 2, 2006, it was designated as an international airport. It’s one of the country’s few airports with a tabletop runway.
The Kozhikode Calicut International Airport (CCJ) has two terminals: domestic and international. Calicut Airport’s domestic terminal handles regional and domestic flights, while the international terminal handles only international aircraft.
