About Cochin

Kochi, historically known as Cochin in English, is a significant port city on India’s Malabar Coast, which borders the Arabian Sea’s Laccadive Sea. It is generally referred to as Ernakulam and is located in the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. Kochi is Kerala’s most heavily populated city. It is the largest and most populated metropolitan area in Kerala, with a corporation limit population of 677,381 within an area of 94.88 km2 and a total urban population of more than 2.1 million within an area of 440 km2. Kochi is also a part of the Greater Cochin region and is recognized by the Indian government as a Tier-II city.

The Kochi Municipal Corporation oversees the city, which was established in 1967, while the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the Goshree Islands Development Authority are statutory authorities that oversee its development (GIDA).

Kochi, known as the “Queen of the Arabian Sea,” was an important spice trading center on India’s west coast from the 14th century onwards, and had a pre-Islamic trade network with Arab merchants. In 1503 the Portuguese established a protectorate over the Kingdom of Cochin. Buildings from this historical period, such as the Old Harbor House, can still be found, some of which have been renovated recently. The Dutch and British established protectorates over the Kingdom of Cochin, which later became a princely state. Kochi is the most popular tourist destination in Kerala, with both international and domestic visitors.  According to a poll done by the Nielsen Company on behalf of the Outlook Traveler magazine, the city is India’s sixth best tourist destination. Kochi was named seventh on Lonely Planet’s list of the top ten cities to visit in 2020 in October 2019.

According to a 2011 research by the McKinsey Global Institute, Kochi is one of the 28 Indian towns among the developing 440 global cities that would generate 50% of global GDP by 2025. Kochi was named India’s top developing future megacity by global professional services firm JLL in July 2018.

Folklore Museum: Folk art, tribal art, traditional art, anthropology, architecture, history, culture, and heritage of South India are all represented at the museum. Mrs. and Mr. George Thaliath founded the museum with the goal of preserving Kerala’s culture, legacy, and folk art education.

It is a repository of India’s lost pride, with unique relics such as Sri Guruvayurappan, a watercolor on paper, Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswathi’s marriage, an oil on canvas, Kindi, a sort of pitcher commonly seen in old houses, and many more priceless gems.

For nearly eight years, 62 artists worked on wood, burning the midnight oil to construct this sanctuary for craftspeople. A must-see destination for tourists, students, scholars, and anthropologists.

Andhakaranazhi Beach: This beach, which attracts a large number of tourists, is located in a coastal community 4 kilometers from Pattanakkad. The tall white and red lighthouse attracts notice as it aids in the navigation of ships at night. The Andhakaranazhi Beach is a popular location for Malayalam film shoots, attracting greater attention from the people.

Despite being severely damaged by the Tsunami in 2004, a beautiful new bridge and an aerial walkway have been built to the sea wall for a spectacular view of a dramatic sunset to remember.

Santa Cruz Basilica: This is considered one of Kerala’s eight basilicas. It is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kochi because it is one of Kerala’s heritage edifices, built in the gothic style with architectural grandeur. Built by the Portuguese, it was elevated to a cathedral by the Pope in conjunction with the establishment of a diocese in India.

Fr. Antonio Moscheni S.J., a well-known Italian painter, painted the Church’s main altar. The splendor of the Last Supper artwork is enhanced with beautiful stained glass painting. The church’s facade is whitewashed in white, with two tall spires decorating the front.

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary: This ecologically vulnerable region, located in the heart of Kochi, spans 2.74 hectares. It has a shallow tidal lake that is linked to Kochi by a canal. It is well-known for the numerous migrating birds that fly here throughout the migratory season, as well as for supporting the area’s mangrove forests.

As a result, it is regarded as Kerala’s green lungs, keeping the city’s pollutants at bay. Many nature enthusiasts and environmentalists are drawn to the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary because of its diverse flora and wildlife. This area alone has been home to 72 different species of birds, adding to the biodiversity of the area.
