Yemen Travel guide

Settled quietly in the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen is an infamous nation not commonly found in travel bucket lists. Situated just below Saudi Arabia, it is known to be the second largest Arab sovereign-state and also having a vast coastline extending up to 2000 kilometres. Read more

  • Unexplored architecture, lush-green hills, valley-like landscapes and whatnot, Yemen is certainly an exotic paradise for backpackers and travel enthusiasts. The country’s hot and humid climate is influenced by the shore as well as its topographical location. To escape the searing heat, the best time to visit here is anytime between October and May when the temperatures are not at their highest. Visitors from India are unlikely to face discomfort as the weather conditions partly mimic their country’s own.
  • Considered as a red flag destination, many travel advisories are against visiting Yemen. You would have heard the phrase, “Risk it for the biscuit”. If you are keen on travelling here, make sure to pre-plan your accommodation, day-to-day itinerary and most importantly hire a local guide. Arabic is widely spoken throughout the country while Mehri and Socotri are predominant in the southern region. In the absence of an English speaking guide, the journey could very well turn a nightmare into reality.
  • Keeping safety in mind, it is advisable to travel via Oman because of ongoing political tensions within parts of Yemen. Many airlines such as Oman Air, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways and Air India offer flights between India and Muscat (Capital of Oman). One can reach Yemen by ferries.
  • What to see in Yemen?

  • Visit Dal Al-Hajar, a royal palace in Wadi Dhar just 25 kilometres from the capital city Sanaa. Previously the residence of a Yemeni ruler, this fairy-type castle welcomes a lot of spectators.
  • Spend time at the Al-Saleh Mosque in Sanaa, largest in the country; it is built across 300,000 square feet of area with charming Islamic-style architecture. Although a Muslim country, this mosque is open to Non-Muslim visitors as well! In the older area of the city, The Great Mosque of Sanaa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating to the 17th century, this mosque portrays Ancient times, unlike the Al-Saleh Mosque which has been given a modern touch.
  • In the south-eastern part of the country, head to Dhofar Mountains. Enjoy the surreal view from the landscapes, explore ancient ruins and if you are lucky, you can sight wildlife in its natural habitat. ‘Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb’ in the Sarawat Mountain range is perfect for hikers. For a fact, it is one of Middle East’s most prominent peaks.

  • Distinct from the usual Middle Eastern cuisine, Yemen has its own variations. Rice, eggs and potatoes are common ingredients. Maraq (Lamb broth soup), Salta (Meat stew with herbs, spices and vegetables), Mandi (meat and rice) and Hulba (a type of chutney) are some of the must-try Yemeni dishes.
  • Traditional clothing, antique jewellery, crafts made from wood and metal are some of the souvenirs you can buy for you and your family. The city centres of Sanaa and Taizz are popular market areas.
