Uzbekistan Travel guide

The enigma of Central Asia, Uzbekistan is a landlocked country known for its museums, mausoleums, and madrassas. The Silk Route stretches from China to Turkey, which can be explored and admired at Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand. It is a country rich in culture, history and has opened its gates for tourism by relaxing the application for Uzbekistan visa. Read more

  • Tashkent, the capital of the country is a must-visit. Destroyed in 1966 by an Earthquake during Soviet Rule, its resurrection is awe-inspiring. The desert citadels, bewitching domes, stupefying mosaics and the bazaars of the country will take you back to the time of the Silk Route.
  • The official language of the country is Uzbec and almost everyone can speak Russian. If you are well-versed with Turkish, then Uzbec is not difficult to comprehend. If you want to explore the country, meet people and discover the essence of the country, then you must be fluent in Russian. Most of the natives cannot understand English.
  • Transportation is not well developed in the country in comparison to western countries. If you want to travel inter-city, then buses are the best option for long journeys, but it is important to note that buses don’t travel overnight. Apart from buses, you can take personal or shared taxis for sightseeing. It is advisable to carry your own food and sealed water bottle while travelling on a bus.
  • The country is surrounded by Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan that are considered unsafe due to ethnic violence and terrorism. However, Uzbekistan is the hidden treasure of Central Asia as it is safe for travellers and the people of the country are welcoming. Being a police state, the country has a low crime rate, but petty thefts and scams are common like in any tourist destination. It is advisable to keep a coloured copy of your passport and hotel receipt along with you while travelling inter-city as the military investigate and check proofs. Be vigilant and abide by the country’s laws and refrain from public displays of affection.
  • What to see in Uzbekistan?

  • The three main attractions of Uzbekistan include Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand - important cities on the Silk Route, which were trading posts in ancient times.
  • Registan in Samarkand, which is considered an architect’s paradise, will transport you to 1400s in reign of Timurid Dynasty. The madrassa that sparkles in azure, gold and lapis lazuli colours at dawn and dusk is a hypnotic sight. Gur-E-Amir mausoleum, with golden coloured domes, is the final resting place of Timur. The Kalon mosque and minaret at Bukhara is an iconic example of Islamic architecture that even the Genghis Khan could not destroy.
