Home to 10 national parks, over 1000 species of birds and several endangered species of animals like the hippo, gorillas, rare golden monkey, chimpanzees Uganda is a tribal nation where you can experience different habitats and culture by every hour that you spend there. The best time to visit Uganda to enjoy the wildlife are during the dry seasons- June to August and December to February. The rainforests are wet all through the year and therefore one cannot avoid rain completely.
  • Petty crimes and violence do erupt at regular intervals and it is advisable for tourists to travel during daylight in known areas. It is advisable to avoid large crowds and travel by road during night outside major towns. Uganda is a multilingual country and English and Swahili are the official languages. English is widely spoken as it was inherited from the colonial rule. India is 2 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Uganda.
  • Air India, Etihad Airways are major airlines that fly to Uganda. While there are no direct flights available, major airlines offer stopover at Addis Ababa, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi, New Delhi and Dubai. For tourists, Ugandan traffic can be chaotic and overwhelming. It is best to hire the services of the tour operators or guided tours who will take you around the safest route and will go a great job of covering attractions. Avoid car rentals and buses as they are unsafe options.
  • What to see in Uganda?

  • The Rwenzori Mountains or the “Mountains of the Moon” are a must on your sightseeing itinerary. The mountains form an impenetrable rocky chain along the Western Edge of Uganda and are capped with fog, thick clouds and snow. A nature trail down the foothills take you through glistening streams, thick vegetation and villages bustling with activity. A longer expedition could lead you to the Afromontane forest through bamboo heathers, and the trekkers could try to scale the Margherita Peak- the third highest in Africa.
  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – undoubtedly the crowd puller of Uganda is the trump card in its tourism selling points. Home to the practically extinct mountain gorillas- a world heritage site, the 331 sq km step mountain rainforest is a great attraction with over 120 species of mammals.
  • Murchinson Falls created by the River Nile through a tight squeeze between 7 m wide gap guarantees a lovely shower and thunder that a waterfall could pack. Embark on a boat cruise down the river to encounter elks and hippos or soak yourself wet at the top. The surrounding national park is also an open savannah to explore with its habitat of lions, elephants, buffaloes and more.
  • Ethical companies take you on a Pygmy tour that involves an interaction with the Batwa community that was evicted from their forest home when it became a national park. You cannot leave Uganda without straddling the equator in the giant concrete spot that is marked with a big “O”. Given that the country lies exactly in the equatorial belt, you will cross it at some point, but it is worth spending a few minutes to take a photo of yourself.
  • Visit the loveliest lake in Uganda- Lake Bunyonyi that means the place of many little birds. The shore is a contorted shoreline bordering 29 islands and surrounded by steep terraced hillsides.
  • A trip to Africa will be incomplete without a rendezvous with the largest river- The Nile. Book yourself on to a rafting trip that offers many combos where you can enjoy a sunset river cruise, river boarding, kayaking or even go on a day raft trip.
