About Riyadh

Saudi Arabia’s capital and the largest city on the Arabian Peninsula is Riyadh. The city is at an average of 600 meters (2,000 feet) above sea level in the midst of the an-Nafud desert, on the eastern portion of the Najd plateau, and welcomes over 5 million tourists each year, making it the world’s forty-ninth most visited city and the Middle East’s sixth. Riyadh is the most populous city in Saudi Arabia, the third most populated in the Middle East, and the 38th most populous in Asia, with a population of 7.6 million people in 2019.

Riyadh is also economically significant because it is home to numerous large institutions and corporations, including the National Commercial Bank (NCB), Alinma Bank, and the Saudi Arabian British Bank (SABB). The King Abdullah Financial District, one of the world’s largest financial districts, the Faisaliyah Center, and the Kingdom Center are all located along Highway 65, which is known locally as the King Fahd Road. Riyadh is one of the world’s fastest-growing cities, with a large expatriate community. Riyadh has been classified as a global metropolis by the United Nations.

Riyadh Airport

The architectural firm HOK developed King Khalid International Airport (IATA: RUH, ICAO: OERK), which is located 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Arabian Bechtel Company Limited functioned as the construction manager on behalf of the Saudi government.

This airport has five passenger terminals (only three of which are in use), each with eight aerobridges, a mosque, covered and uncovered car parking for 11,600 vehicles, a Royal Terminal (for the kingdom’s guests, government heads, and Saudi royal family), a central control tower (one of the world’s tallest), and two parallel runways measuring 4,260 meters (13,980 feet). Formerly the world’s largest airport in terms of ground area, KKIA now has the world’s second-largest land area, following King Fahd International Airport. Riyadh Airports Company manages and operates the airport. The Royal Mosque, with stained glass by British architectural artist Brian Clarke, was a seminal work in the history of the medium, regarded as the largest and most technically advanced stained glass installation of the modern era.

At the airport, there are five primary passenger terminals:

  • • All foreign flights depart from Terminal 1. (except those operated by Saudia and Middle East Airlines, which are SkyTeam members and Flynas).
  • • All foreign flights for SkyTeam members, including Saudia and Flynas, depart from Terminal 2.
  • • Terminal 3 is currently undergoing redevelopment. Until Terminal 5 was operational, it was utilized to service all Saudia and Flynas internal flights.
  • • Terminal 4 is currently unusable, having never been used since its construction, and is still devoid of air bridges. It is now being developed over a five-year period.
  • • Terminal 5 is the newest terminal, which opened in 2016 and is now used for domestic flights by Saudia and Flynas.

Top Tourist Spots

Jebel Fihrayn: In the stony desert northwest of Riyadh, The Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) is an unexpected and spectacular natural wonder. The location, which is approximately 90 kilometers from Riyadh, is ideal for a day excursion or an overnight camping trip from the city. One of the best sites to visit in Riyadh, as well as the best place to go hiking in Riyadh.

World sights park Riyadh: This unusual and modest show takes you on a fantastic journey throughout the world. The Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, and the Taj Mahal are among the smaller versions on display. The two Holy Mosques, Al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, are also Saudi landmarks. If you visit Riyadh, your tour may encompass a globe tour!

Masmak Fort: Masmak Fort is a massive clay and mud-brick castle that witnessed the formation of a kingdom. Al Masmak — which means “high, sturdy, and thick construction” in Arabic — stands as a proud reminder of Saudi Arabia’s long and illustrious past. The stronghold, which was built in 1865, has served several roles. It was originally used to house the garrisons who guarded the city, but after King Abdulaziz’s raid, it became an ammo storehouse and, later, a prison.

King Abdulaziz Historical Centre: The King Abdulaziz Historical Centre, which is located near the National Museum, is one of Riyadh’s most distinctive tourist attractions. It covers a huge area and includes numerous exhibitions on topics such as Saudi Arabia’s history, the ancient and present Arabian Peninsula, man’s interaction with the universe, and the history of Islam and other Arab civilizations.

Diriyah: Diriyah was the first Saudi capital and the home of the Saudi royal dynasty. Until it was destroyed in the early 19th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was one of the major towns on the Arabian Peninsula. The city is currently a tourist destination where visitors can see the historic mud architecture up close, as well as the city’s numerous parks and intriguing areas, such as the Saad bin Saud Palace, which is known for its courtyard.
