About Kolkata

Kolkata, formerly Calcutta (the official name until 2001), is the capital of West Bengal, India. The city is around 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of the Bangladesh border, on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. It is Eastern India’s key business, commercial, and financial hub, as well as the region’s main port of communication.

Kolkata is India’s seventh-most populous city, according to the 2011 Indian census, with a population of 4.5 million persons within the city limits and a population of over 14.1 million in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. It is India’s third-most-populated metropolitan area. In 2021, the metropolitan region of Kolkata would have surpassed 15 million registered voters. Kolkata is India’s oldest functioning port and the country’s only major riverine port. Kolkata is recognized as India’s Cultural Capital.

Kolkata, which was formerly the capital of Indian business, culture, and politics, suffered decades of political unrest and economic stagnation after independence in 1947. Kolkata’s culture is marked by quirks such as uniquely close-knit neighborhoods (paras) and freestyle talks, despite the city’s ethnic diversity (adda). Tollywood, West Bengal’s film industry, and cultural institutions including the Academy of Fine Arts, the Victoria Memorial, the Asiatic Society, the Indian Museum, and the National Library of India are all located in Kolkata. The Agri Horticultural Society of India, the Geological Survey of India, the Botanical Survey of India, the Calcutta Mathematical Society, the Indian Science Congress Association, the Zoological Survey of India, the Institution of Engineers, the Anthropological Survey of India, and the Indian Public Health Association are among the scientific institutions in Kolkata. The city is home to four Nobel Laureates and two Nobel Memorial Prize winners. Kolkata, unlike other Indian cities, focuses on association football and other sports, while having large cricketing venues and franchises.

Kolkata Airport

The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (IATA: CCU, ICAO: VECC) is an international airport in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, that serves the Kolkata Metropolitan Area and serves as the aviation hub for eastern and northeastern India. It’s around 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) away from the city center. Before being renamed in 1995 after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a notable leader of the Indian independence movement, the airport was known as Kolkata Airport and Dum Dum Airport. Kolkata Airport, was inaugurated in 1924, is one of India’s oldest airports.

In Kolkata, there is only ONE terminal that services both domestic and international flights via multiple entrance gates for different aircraft operators. The airport has been divided into the two sections indicated above and is fairly large and spacious to allow for passenger circulation. Domestic departures depart from the gates near the airport’s entrance, while international departures depart from the gates further down.
