When traveling to and from the UAE, it is essential to understand the baggage rules at Dubai and Sharjah airports. These rules ensure the safety of all passengers and crew. As of October 2025, Emirates Airlines has banned power banks on flights, making it even more important to know the do’s and don’ts for packing. Here’s a simple guide to the banned and restricted items at Dubai and Sharjah airports, so you can travel without hassle.

Banned Items in Hand Baggage at Dubai Airports

At Dubai International Airport, certain items are not allowed in your hand baggage. Here’s a list of banned items:

    • Hammers, nails, screwdrivers, and sharp work tools
    • Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm
    • Personal grooming kits with parts longer than 6 cm
    • Swords and other sharp objects

    2. Firearms and Ammunition

    • Firearms, ammunition, flare guns, and laser guns
    • Walkie-talkies and handcuffs

    3. Martial Arts Weapons and Dangerous Tools

Restrictions for Hand Baggage in Dubai

Some items are allowed but with specific restrictions:

    1. Liquids

    • Each liquid container must not exceed 100ml.
    • You can carry a maximum of 10 containers, totaling 1 liter. All liquids should be packed in a clear, resealable plastic bag.

    2. Medications

    • Carry medications with a doctor’s prescription, especially for controlled substances.

    3. Power Banks

    • Power banks are allowed but should not exceed 100Wh. If the power bank is between 100Wh and 160Wh, it may be allowed depending on the airline. Anything above 160Wh is not allowed.

    4. Metal Medical Devices

    • If you have a metal medical device, you must carry a doctor’s certificate.

Banned Items in Hand Baggage at Sharjah Airports

Sharjah Airport has an even stricter set of rules. The following items are banned from both cabin and checked baggage:

    1. Bludgeons and Sports Equipment

    • Items like billy clubs, baseball bats, and similar objects.

    2. Flammable Gases and Materials

    • Gas cartridges, gas lighters, and dangerous wet materials like calcium carbide.

    3. Explosives and Firearms

    • Firearms, explosives, fireworks, and blasting caps are prohibited.

    4. Toxic and Radioactive Materials

    • Gases like carbon monoxide and radioactive materials are banned.

    5. Dangerous Tools and Articles

    • Items like ice picks, razors, toy weapons, and scissors that could be used as weapons.

Restricted Items in Sharjah Hand Baggage

Some items are allowed with specific conditions in Sharjah Airport:

    1. Liquids

    • Like in Dubai, liquids must not exceed 100ml per container, and the total liquid must be 1 liter.

    2. Medicines

    • You can carry baby food and prescription medicines but need proof, such as a prescription or doctor’s letter.

    General Tips for Safe Travel

    1. Check with Your Airline

    • Airlines may have additional rules beyond airport guidelines. Always confirm with your airline before your flight.

    2. Pack Smart

    • Minimize liquids and electronic devices in your hand baggage. Make sure everything you carry is within the allowed limits.

    3. Prepare for Security

    • Be ready for security checks. Keep liquids in a clear plastic bag and have your medications with proper documentation.

    4. Stay Updated

    • Rules can change, so always check for the latest updates before your trip.

Knowing what you can and can’t carry in your hand baggage is crucial for a smooth airport experience. By following these guidelines, you can avoid delays and ensure that your flight goes off without a hitch. If you are booking international flight tickets, it becomes even more important to review both airline and airport baggage rules before you travel. Always remember to check with your airline for any specific carrier rules and stay updated with the latest baggage regulations. Safe travels!
