Applicants can renew most of the visas, but you can extend the holiday/visit visa for a longer period. A holder of an South Africa Visit Visa can apply for one extension per visit. The rule is that you should apply for an extension for 60 days before the visa expires. Applicants can apply for extensions for up to an additional 90 days. If you are from a visa exempt country, you can enter the country and will automatically receive up to 30-90 days.
The applicants can apply for a South Africa Visa renewal if they meet the following conditions:
Meet all the Important Requirements: To qualify for a renewal of a visa, you must again be able to meet all the requirements. This includes any criteria added or updated since your original visa application. Your visa renewal might result in a rejection, if you are unable to meet any requirements.

That does not mean however that you cannot submit a renewal earlier. You can, but it has to be within the final 6 months of the validity of the existing visa.
Apply for Renewals within South Africa: Applicants cannot renew visas from outside of South Africa. Instead, Home Affairs stipulate that applicants must submit renewal applications at a VFS application center in South Africa.
Apply for Renewal as early as possible: You do not only plan, you also start early. We recommend you should start preparing for your renewal as soon as possible. For some visas, like Work Visas, you can start as far in advance as 12 months before the expiry date of the existing visa.
