Planning a trip to Saudi Arabia has become easier for many international travellers. If you hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa, you may be eligible to obtain a Saudi visa on arrival, even when your nationality is not included in the standard Saudi eVisa programme.

However, holding one of these visas does not automatically guarantee eligibility. Your visa must meet specific conditions, and you should carry the correct documents before travelling. Therefore, it is important to understand the requirements before booking your flight.

Here is a simple guide explaining how the Saudi visa-on-arrival facility works, who may qualify and what to expect at the airport.

    1. What Is a Saudi Visa on Arrival? What Is a Saudi Visa on Arrival?

A Saudi visa on arrival allows eligible travellers to complete the visa process after reaching an authorised entry point in Saudi Arabia. As a result, they may not need to visit a Saudi embassy or obtain a traditional visa before departure.

The visa is mainly intended for short-term visits. Depending on the conditions stated on the issued visa, visitors may use it for tourism, leisure, attending events, visiting family or friends, and performing Umrah outside the Hajj season.

However, a tourist visa does not permit paid employment or long-term study. Similarly, it cannot be used to perform Hajj. Although the visa is issued after arrival, airline staff may check your eligibility before boarding. Therefore, you should confirm the rules and prepare all the necessary documents before travelling.

    2. Who Can Qualify for the Visa on Arrival?Who Can Qualify for the Visa on Arrival?

Travellers of different nationalities may qualify if they hold a valid visa issued by the United States, the United Kingdom or a country within the Schengen Area.

The supporting visa should generally be :

    • Valid on the date of entry into Saudi Arabia
    • Issued for tourism or business purposes
    • Previously used to enter the issuing country or region
    • Clearly visible in the traveller’s current or previous passport
    • Supported by physical entry and exit stamps where required

Permanent residents of the US, UK or European Union may also qualify, subject to the latest rules. Nevertheless, requirements may vary depending on the traveller’s nationality, passport type and residence status.

For that reason, travellers should check their eligibility through the official Saudi visa platform before confirming flights and accommodation.

    3. The Supporting Visa Must Usually Have Been UsedThe Supporting Visa Must Usually Have Been Used

One of the most important conditions is that the US, UK or Schengen visa should normally have been used at least once. This means you must have previously entered the country or region that issued the visa.

For example, holding an unused Schengen visa may not be enough. You should have travelled to a Schengen country using that particular visa. Likewise, a valid US or UK visa should generally have been used to enter the respective country.

Saudi immigration officers or airline staff may ask for evidence of this previous journey. Therefore, your passport should contain clear entry and exit stamps connected to the supporting visa.

If the valid visa is in an old passport, carry both your old and current passports. In addition, make sure the personal details on both documents match.

Some countries now use electronic immigration records rather than physical passport stamps. However, digital records may not always be accepted as proof. Consequently, travellers without a physical entry stamp should confirm the latest requirements with their airline and the relevant Saudi authorities.

    4. Documents to Carry When TravellingDocuments to Carry When Travelling

Preparing your documents in advance can help you avoid delays at the airline check-in counter and Saudi immigration. Although additional documents may be requested, travellers should generally carry the following

    • A passport valid for at least six months
    • A valid US, UK or Schengen visa
    • Proof that the supporting visa has been used
    • Previous passports containing relevant visas or stamps
    • A confirmed return or onward flight ticket
    • Hotel booking or accommodation details
    • Travel and health insurance documents
    • A valid international payment card
    • Proof of sufficient funds, if requested

Moreover, keep printed copies of your flight ticket, hotel booking and insurance. Digital copies are useful, but airport staff may request physical documents during the verification process.

Children must also hold valid passports and the required travel documents. Meanwhile, applications for travellers under 18 should be handled by a parent or legal guardian.

    5. How the Visa-on-Arrival Process WorksHow the Visa-on-Arrival Process Works

After landing at an authorised Saudi entry point, follow the signs for visa-on-arrival services. Depending on the airport, the application may be completed at a self-service machine or a dedicated immigration counter.

First, present your passport and the valid US, UK or Schengen visa. The officer may then check whether the supporting visa has been used previously. In addition, you may be asked about your accommodation, return ticket and reason for visiting Saudi Arabia.

The general process may include :

    • Presenting your passport and supporting visa
    • Completing the required arrival information
    • Providing fingerprints and a photograph
    • Purchasing the required medical insurance
    • Paying the applicable visa charges
    • Proceeding to passport control after approval

Visa charges and insurance costs may change. Therefore, check the current amount before departure and carry a payment card that works internationally.

Processing is often straightforward. Nevertheless, waiting times may be longer during weekends, holiday periods and the busy Umrah season.

    6. Visa Validity and Permitted StayVisa Validity and Permitted Stay

The validity period and permitted stay will be mentioned on the visa issued at the border. Tourist visas may allow multiple entries, while the total length of stay is subject to the conditions printed on the document.

Once you receive the visa, check the details carefully. In particular, review the expiry date, number of permitted entries and maximum length of stay.

Visa validity does not necessarily mean that you can remain in Saudi Arabia for the entire validity period. For example, a visa may remain valid for several months while allowing a shorter total stay.

Most importantly, do not overstay the permitted period. Overstaying a Saudi visa may lead to fines, detention, deportation or restrictions on future travel to the country.

    Important Checks Before Travelling –

Saudi visa policies can change without much notice. Therefore, before relying on the visa-on-arrival facility :

    • Confirm that your supporting visa is still valid
    • Check whether the visa category is accepted
    • Make sure the visa has been used previously
    • Carry the passport containing the entry stamps
    • Check your passport’s remaining validity
    • Confirm the rules with your airline
    • Review current Hajj or Umrah restrictions
    • Keep printed copies of all travel documents

Prepare Before You Travel to Saudi Arabia

The Saudi visa-on-arrival facility can make travelling easier for visitors holding valid US, UK or Schengen visas. However, eligibility depends on several conditions, including the validity and previous use of the supporting visa.

More importantly, final entry approval remains with Saudi immigration authorities. Airline staff may also refuse boarding if the required documents cannot be verified. So, check the latest official rules, carry clear proof of previous travel and keep every essential document ready.

With proper preparation, the arrival process can be simple and convenient, allowing you to begin your Saudi journey with fewer delays.
