Depart after breakfast and climb into the hills, through rubber and spice into tea, with stops at the Valara and Cheeyappara waterfalls and the valley viewpoints. Arrive Munnar in the afternoon and check in. Evening at leisure.

Early start for Eravikulam National Park, reached by Forest Department bus, where the Nilgiri Tahr grazes the high grassland. | Alleppey

Descend from the hills to the backwaters and board your private houseboat at Alleppey around midday. The boat cruises the Vembanad canals through the afternoon; lunch, evening tea and dinner are cooked on board, and the boat moors overnight in a quiet channel. Breakfast on board during a short morning cruise, then disembark and drive south along the coast to Kovalam. A full-day excursion south. Padmanabhapuram is the largest wooden palace complex in Asia — carved rosewood ceilings, polished black granite floors and cool inner courtyards. Continue to Kanyakumari at the southern tip of the subcontinent, where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet, and where the Vivekananda Rock Memorial stands offshore.
