| Munnar

Meet at Cochin International Airport and drive inland and upwards into the Western Ghats. The road climbs through rubber, then spice, then tea, with waterfall stops at Valara and Cheeyappara on the way. Arrive in Munnar in the late afternoon and check in. Day 2

| Vagamon

Morning in the Munnar high range — a guided walk through a working tea estate, then Mattupetty Dam and lake, with viewpoints across the plantations. After lunch, drive south to Vagamon, dropping out of tea country into a landscape of open grassland and rock. Check in and take the evening at leisure on the meadows. Day 3

| Vagamon

A full day exploring on foot and by vehicle. The Vagamon meadows roll for kilometres with almost no tree cover, and the planted pine forest beside them is one of the quietest places in Kerala. Climb to the Kurisumala ridge for the long view over the plains, and visit Marmala waterfall and the Vagamon lake as time allows. Day 4

| Thekkady

Depart for Thekkady on the edge of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, through the cardamom hills. Check in, then take the afternoon boat ride on the Periyar reservoir — the lake was formed when the Mullaperiyar dam flooded the valley, and the drowned tree stumps along the shoreline are where elephants, sambar and gaur come down to drink. Evening free in Thekkady’s spice market.
