Distance approx. 35 km · Driving time approx. 1 hr 15 min · Meals: none included · Overnight Cochin
| Munnar
A guided morning walk through Fort Kochi: St Francis Church, where Vasco da Gama was first buried; the Dutch Palace with its Ramayana murals; the Paradesi Synagogue and the antique lanes of Jew Town; the Chinese fishing nets on the shoreline. Later, depart for Munnar, climbing through rubber, spice and finally tea, with waterfall stops on the way. An early start for Eravikulam National Park, reached by Forest Department bus from the Rajamalai gate, where the endangered Nilgiri Tahr grazes the shola grassland with Anamudi behind. Continue to a working tea estate for a guided walk through plucking, withering and processing, then Mattupetty Dam and lake. Echo Point and the Tea Museum as time allows. Distance approx. 55 km across the day · Meals: breakfast included · Overnight Munnar
| Thekkady
Leave Munnar after breakfast for Thekkady, on the fringe of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The road drops out of tea country into cardamom hills through Kuttikanam and the spice belt. Descend from the hills to the backwaters. At Kumarakom you board your private houseboat, a converted rice barge with an en-suite cabin, a shaded sit-out deck and a cook aboard. The boat casts off in the early afternoon and cruises the Vembanad canals — paddy fields below water level behind their bunds, coir being twisted on the bank, kingfishers and cormorants. A traditional snake boat ride is arranged on the water. All meals are prepared on board and the boat moors overnight in a quiet channel. Distance approx. 135 km · Driving time approx. 4 hrs · Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner included · Overnight aboard the houseboat
