The land of ancient civilization is continuously evolving throughout history giving us enormous natural and cultural wealth which is worth witnessing by one and all. These sites have outstanding universal value and are legally protected by an international convention that is administered by UNESCO.

To claim a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list, the landmark should be unique geographically and must have a historical significance that extends culturally and physically. It can be an ancient ruin, historical structure, city, forest, mountain, natural or manmade site.

These World Heritage Sites highlight the natural beauty of the place and signify the remarkable accomplishments of humanity. They are established as protected zones to conserve them for as long as possible which may otherwise be lost due to human or natural intervention or lack of monitoring and management by the local administration. The responsibility for the conservation of these places of outstanding cultural and natural importance falls on all the participating countries.

To date, there are around 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India ranging from National Parks to ancient ruins and modern architectural marvels.
