Background: The Kodavas have a distinct ethnic identity that they have fought to preserve throughout the ages. They have a distinct language, customs, and traditions.

The names of the Kodava people are distinctive and contain a clan name. Clans are important in Kodava tradition, and families trace their ancestors through clans. Marriage within a clan is frowned upon.

Kodavas are culturally distinct from other groups in southern India. Despite being Hindus, Kodavas refuse to recognize Brahmin priests, preferring to have rituals performed by their own elders. The ceremonies are organized with the assistance of the community's elders. The fire god, which is important in most Hindu ceremonies, is typically missing in Kodava tradition. There is also no use of slokas or Vedic chanting.

Interestingly, until a few decades ago, the birth of a male child was signaled by a gunshot, heralding the coming of a warrior to the world. When the infant was named, he was given tiger flesh preserved in the hope that he would grow up to fight like one.

Every Coorg rite — naming ceremony, marriage, housewarming, and even many festivals – contains a significant martial aspect. Today, thick banana stems are hacked with a short Coorg sword at weddings to represent the groom's party fighting and taking as many lives for the bride's hand. A symbolic nod to the days when men battled for the ladies they cared about. Coorg weddings are a tremendously entertaining show, with handsome individuals, colourful traditional clothes, eating, dancing, and good humour. Women are highly valued in Coorg's free culture, and chivalry is still very much alive.

Puthari, or ‘new rice,' is the harvest celebration, and when the first stalks of rice are cut, pistol rounds are fired into the night sky in exuberant abandon. The festival of weapons, on the other hand, allows Coorgs to practice their marksmanship by shooting a coconut set high up on a tall tree. This was also the time of year when Coorgs would congregate and head into the jungle to hunt tigers and wild boars. All hunting is now prohibited for conservation grounds.

Because the indigenous were not typical businesspeople, traders from beyond Coorg migrated here. The hardworking Moplahs of neighbouring Kerala, as well as a few families from established business groups in other areas of South India, migrated in to create the backbone of trade and commerce.

The earliest Christians were Konkanis from the Mangalore coast, including those who were liberated from Tipu Sultan's captivity following Tipu Sultan's fall. They arrived in Coorg at the king's request to assist restore the country that had been devastated by war. Christians from Kerala have also recently come here as plantation owners and traders.
