Kuwait Airways

About Kuwait Airways

In 1954, a national carrier was founded on the back of the 1940s oil boom. Kuwait Airways Company initially operated a limited network of Basra, Abadan, Beirut, Damascus, and Jerusalem; however, the fledgling carrier was facing financial difficulties a year later, and the Kuwaiti government purchased a 50% stake in the airline, thus doubling its capital. After entering the tumultuous world of aviation, the government eventually purchased a 100 percent stake in Kuwait Airways.

Kuwait Airways entered the jet age in 1962 when it leased the world's first jet-engine airliner, the Comet 4-C. Three Boeing 707s were supplied in 1968 to keep up with rapidly changing aviation requirements. Kuwait Airways had an all-Boeing 707 fleet of eight planes ten years later. Kuwait Airways entered the wide-body era in 1978, when it received its first two B747-200s, followed by a third the following year. Kuwait Airways was able to expand its network to include New York in the west and Manila in the east as a result of this expansion.

In 1980-1981, four B727-200s were delivered as part of the fleet's modernization. Eight Airbus A310 and A300-600 aircraft were delivered two years later, while three Boeing 767-200ER aircraft joined the wide-body fleet in 1986.

Kuwaiti Airways had 17 planes in its fleet from the time of Kuwait's liberation until 1998.

Kuwait Airways began a plan to develop its fleet at the end of 2014, and the business gradually began replacing existing aircraft with new aircraft, receiving 30 aircraft by the end of 2020, as follows:

  1. 5 Airbus A330-200 aircraft received between May-November 2015.
  2. 7 Airbus A320-200CEO aircraft received between December 2014-June 2015.
  3. 10 Boeing B777-300ER long range aircraft all received by 2017.
  4. 6 A320neo aircraft received between 2019-2020.
  5. 2 A330-800neo aircraft received in 2020.
