BIMAN AIRLINES

ABOUT BIMAN AIRLINES

Bangladesh's national airline is Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The airline's primary hub is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, although it also has secondary hubs in Chittagong and Sylhet, including Shah Amanat International Airport and Osmani International Airport. The airline has air service agreements in 42 countries and provides international passenger and cargo services to a variety of locations. Balaka Bhaban, the airline's headquarters, is located in Kurmitola, in the northern section of Dhaka. The airline's corporate activity includes annual Hajj flights, transportation of tourists, migrants, and non-resident Bangladeshi workers, and the activities of its subsidiaries. Bangladesh's air transport business, which is growing at an annual pace of 8% thanks to a significant number of outbound tourists, domestic tourists, and non-resident Bangladeshi travelers, is fiercely competitive, with a number of private Bangladeshi airlines as well as Biman facing tough competition. Biman was founded in February 1972 and held an internal monopoly in Bangladesh's aviation business for 24 years, until 1996. The airline increased its fleet and routes in the decades after its creation, but it was harmed by corruption and incompetence. Biman had 29 international destinations at its peak, ranging from New York City in the west to Tokyo in the east. The airline was entirely owned and administered by the government of Bangladesh until 23 July 2007, when the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh turned it into the country's largest public limited company.

The airline has decreased workforce and began to modernize its aircraft since becoming a public limited corporation in 2007. In 2008, the airline inked a deal with Boeing for ten new planes, with options for ten more. Biman expanded its destinations and in-flight facilities after receiving the new planes, including onboard Internet and Wi-Fi, mobile phones, and live TV broadcasts. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency has certified Biman Bangladesh Airlines as safe to travel in Europe. Biman has also passed the IATA Operational Safety Audit, and the airline has resumed flights to some of its previous Asian and European destinations since then.
